When LA Erupted In Anger: A Look Back At The Rodney King Riots

Twenty-five years ago this week, four Los Angeles policemen — three of them white — were acquitted of the savage beating of Rodney King, an African-American man. Caught on camera by a bystander, graphic video of the attack was broadcast into homes across the nation and worldwide.
The acquittals were announced around 3 p.m.; less than three hours later, the unrest began.
Residents set fires, looted and destroyed liquor stores, grocery stores, retail shops and fast food restaurants. Light-skinned motorists — both white and Latino — were targeted; some were pulled out of their cars and beaten.
“One of the most astounding things about the 1992 Los Angeles riots was the response of the LAPD, which is to say no response at all,” says author Joe Domanick, who has studied and written about the riots, in an interview with Grigsby Bates.
That night, Gates went to speak at a fundraiser in West Los Angeles and reportedly ordered cops to retreat. Police did not respond to incidents of looting and violence around the city until almost three hours after the original rioting broke out.
For the rest of the night, the scene at Florence and Normandie repeated itself with rioters across the city. Just before 9 p.m. that night, Mayor Tom Bradley called for a state of emergency, and California Gov. Pete Wilson ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to report to the city.
But the Rodney King beating and the Los Angeles riots exploded out of social issues that still have not been resolved. That shocking, grainy video of his beating would be just the first of a long line of police brutality videos to go viral.
That and issues such as racial profiling are as evident now — in places such as Baltimore, Ferguson and other inner cities — as they were in 1992 Los Angeles, says Armour, the USC professor and author of a book about what he calls the 1992 “uprising.”
“Ain’t nothing changed but the year it is,” he says.

The con starts their mark with something plausible that their marks understand – eg, Prosperity Christianity. Crooked Drumpf and Kochs exemplify themselves as the paragon idols of Prosperity Christianity. Drumpfians and Deplorables know Prosperity Christianity, aspire to Prosperity Christianity.
With each move, Crooked Drumpf has taken them further and further from reality – that disconnect from reality. He hooked them with that pot of gold of their Prosperity Christianity.
Crooked Drumpf’s campaign was the stall to get his Drumpfians off-balance – the story of his so-called surprise election. When Crooked Drumpf was ready to pull his sting, Drumpfians proved that they would fall for it – his con with something that on the first day they would have laughed it off at its very suggestion.
Fascism works in this con.
That is how we now live under Crooked Drumpf’s and Pence’s American Fascism.
That is how they overthrew our American Democracy.

On Wednesday, Giuliani opened his little mouth and screamed to Sean Hannity that Donald Trump had reimbursed Michael Cohen for the $130,000 hush money payout to Stormy Daniels. The world reeled for thirty seconds and then returned to its regularly scheduled program, Hell All the Time. On Friday, we learned the following: Trump and Giuliani reportedly hatched this harebrained scheme together! They meant to do this! They seem to think it will work out!

Last night, Kansas lawmakers passed the discriminatory child welfare bill that will use taxpayer dollars to discriminate against LGBTQ Kansans seeking to adopt/foster children. HRC, along with Equality Kansas and ACLU of Kansas worked diligently to fight this bill. Ultimately, the bill passed the House by only one vote! We will continue fighting in Kansas and work to elect fair minded legislators in November.

Republi-con and Christian Con-servative Big Guh’mint politicians intrude into our medical care, scaring physicians with exorbitant fines and lifetime in prison, forcing health care providers to refuse to accept us – to deny our Life, our Liberty, our Pursuit of Happiness.
Republi-cons and Christian Con-servatives re-employ Hitler’s Three Stages to Genocide:
– You have no Rights
– You have no Rights to live amongst us

In today’s Amerikan application:
– Criminalise and outlaw the very existence of Trans people, appoint judges throughout the entire ‘Justice’ system who summarily decide against them.
– Force Trans people to segregate from the greater society, make them desperate to seek accommodation amongst themselves as their only solace.
– Create the conditions where the lack of health care and the society that shuns and abuses them will set off their despair and Suicide.

Desperation leads us to experimentation.
Unfortunately, Our Trans Community has been here before. There have been times and places during the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, when health care was illegal and unattainable throughout the USA. There have been times when (mostly) Republi-con Presidents ordered the blanket denial of Trans health care through both MediCare and Medic Aid. Obama began allowing coverage only to have Crooked Drumpf stop coverage. Individual Trans people filed their own lawsuits seeking coverage with varying results – some won coverage, some lost coverage.
Private and employment-sponsored health insurance? HA! Trans health care was typically listed first in the ‘Exclusions’ section.
My mentor Denise travelled to Mexico for prescription hormones and her surgery in the 1960s.

I explored using my mother’s Estrogen injection fluid (February 1979). I didn’t have needles. I allowed the fluid to absorb into the bloodstream underneath my tongue. Dunno if anything happened, I didn’t feel any change.
Then, a Disco club dancing partner offered her Nornyl Birth Control pills to me during Spring and Summer 1979. That continued for maybe four months while I awaited the counsellor to decide if I was okay to Transition. I did experience feminising changes on Birth Control pills.
I’ve been left by physicians who refused to continue me as their patient, Estrogen abruptly stopt, at least a handful of times.
The first time was when I moved to Utah (October 1980). I discovered the ‘health food’ store and its supplies of herbs, spices, foods. They had books available to read from their store library that explained the medicinal elements of food; I read those books and used them for reference whenever I went shopping there. They offered evening classes taught by professional herbologists and nutritionists; I attended those classes to learn more. I’ve resorted to phyto-Estrogen each time doctors withdrew my prescription and health care.
Next, there was 2000 and afterwards following my car collision injuries (December 1999). I again resorted to the local Co-op for a variety of phyto-Estrogen herbs, spices, foods.
I remained mostly off meds throughout that decade, having two or three years (2003 to 2005, or thereabouts). This was a combination of a Family Practise physician who had been my Paediatrician, but I didn’t tell him who I was when he knew me as a child. He died suddenly. His successor took over his patients for a year til she moved home to Germany.
I found one physician who offered a one 1-year prescription in 2010. He refused to accept me beyond that one year prescription.
The latest time of fallow, being involuntarily off meds, was 2013 to 2015. I lived on rosemary, soy, barley, pennyroyal, squaw vine, and other phyto-Estrogens.
I’d do that same thing again.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — With her insurance about to run out and Republicans in her home state of Missouri ramping up rhetoric against gender-affirming health care, Erin Stille nervously visited a foreign pharmaceutical site as a “last resort” to ensure she could continue getting the hormones she needs.
Stille, 26, sent a $300 bank transfer to a Taiwan-based supplier for a 6-month supply of estrogen patches and androgen-blocking pills. For three weeks she feared she’d been scammed but breathed a sigh of relief when a large package arrived at her home in St. Peters.
“It’s definitely a little scary,” Stille said. “Taking a chance like this, I could have my money stolen and there’s not much I can do about it. But I figured, at this point, that the benefits outweigh the risks.”
Stille, and others nationwide, are scrambling to form contingency plans as Republican politicians rapidly erode access to the gender-affirming treatments many credit as life-saving.
Fears became even more pronounced in Missouri this month after Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey issued a first-of-its-kind emergency rule that places strict restrictions on that care for minors — and adults.
While some doctors say self-medicating trans health care is dangerous, Stille is among a growing population who say they see no other option.
If enacted, the Missouri rule will require people to have experienced an “intense pattern” of documented gender dysphoria for three years and to have received at least 15 hourly sessions with a therapist over 18 months or more before receiving puberty blockers, hormones, surgery or other treatment.
Patients also must first be screened for autism and “social media addiction,” and any psychiatric symptoms from mental health issues will have to be treated and resolved. Some people will be able to maintain their prescriptions while undergoing the required assessments, which aren’t affordable for many.
Some transgender Missourians and health care providers sued to overthrow the rule, and a St. Louis judge pushed back its effective date from last Thursday to Monday at 5 p.m. as she weighs whether to block its enforcement as the lawsuit proceeds in court. A ruling is expected Monday.
Bailey has touted the rule as a way to shield residents, especially minors, from what he describes as experimental treatments, but puberty blockers and sex hormones have been prescribed for decades and are widely considered medically necessary for many trans people.
Some gender-affirming treatment providers in Missouri are already planning to cut back on care.
Vivent Health Interim President and CEO Brandon Hill said doctors are worried about meeting documentation requirements for new patients, so clinics in St. Louis and Kansas City will only provide gender-affirming health care to current patients. Vivent Health provides HIV-focused and LGBTQ+ friendly health care in St. Louis, Kansas City and other states.
“Do-it-yourself hormone replacement therapy” has become an increasingly common way for trans residents of restrictive states to avoid involuntarily stopping hormone treatment. Trans people like Stille have been discreetly circulating a comprehensive guide and a digital master list of hormone suppliers, some more reliable than others, through social media.
This online marketplace, known as the gray market, is comprised of unregulated suppliers who sell legitimate medications, sometimes name-brand, outside the distribution channels authorized by the manufacturers. Some trans people in GOP-controlled states that have not yet enacted bans are buying from these suppliers to build an emergency stockpile.
But self-administering hormones without adequate supervision can be “extraordinarily dangerous,” especially for those taking testosterone, said Dr. Robert Lash, chief medical officer at the Endocrine Society, which represents specialists who treat hormone conditions.
Although taking testosterone can help trans men develop some desired physical features, it also increases their risk of a blood clot or stroke. Lash said doctors need to closely monitor a patient’s red blood cell count, lipids and liver function and adjust their dosage accordingly. Estrogen use can also increase risk of blood clots, he said.
“These are powerful medications with a lot of effects on a lot of body systems, not all of which are good,” Lash said. “Taking these hormones on your own is just an invitation to running into problems. People need to be extraordinarily careful when using them and really shouldn’t without medical supervision.”
He cautioned against taking hormones from any unregulated pharmacy, veterinary source or overseas provider.
Even for those willing to assume the risks, not all trans people have the same level of access. Trans men like Levi Sobel, a 30-year-old from Springfield, are finding it much more difficult to source testosterone than other hormones.
Testosterone is classified in the U.S. as a Schedule III controlled substance, along with ketamine and some opioids, and is subjected to more regulations that the typical prescription drug.
Sobel said unregulated testosterone providers are “pretty much nonexistent” in the U.S., and it’s unwise to buy from international sellers because of the higher likelihood of the hormone being seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“This makes it essentially impossible for me to stockpile in the same ways my transfeminine friends can,” Sobel said. “The best I can do to stretch it is to make sure I’m using every last drop from every vial.”
Stacy Cay, an autistic trans woman and comedian in Kansas City, has already saved up enough injectable estrogen to last about a year. The more she can stockpile, the more time she has to prepare her plan to relocate if the emergency rule isn’t blocked in court, she said.
“This feels like the end of Kansas City being my home,” Cay said. “It feels like it’s being taken away.”
Others, like Ellie Bridgman, a gas station attendant in Union, are employing a unique strategy to stockpile hormones. The 23-year-old, who said the attorney general’s rule would cut off her treatment access because she’s autistic and has depression, started injecting only a half dose of estrogen before her routine blood tests so her hormone levels would read low.
This led her doctor to increase her prescription.
Bridgman said she may consider decreasing her dosage to conserve medication or supplement her supply with an unregulated purchase. Stockpiling is her “No. 1 priority.” Without hormone replacement therapy, she said, “the suicidal thoughts and ideation comes back stronger than ever. This is my lifeline.”

Friedrich Kellner, a courthouse administrator in a small town in central Germany, began his diary on the day Adolf Hitler sent the German Wehrmacht into Poland. He knew the risks in such an undertaking, but as a former Social Democrat who had campaigned against the Nazis before they came to power, Kellner deeply felt the necessity to expose Nazi crimes, record the public’s approval of their Führer and the Nazi Party, unmask the truth cloaked by Joseph Goebbels’s propaganda, and also lay bare the Allies’ many lost chances to prevent the war. Above all else, Kellner wanted to be sure future generations would know the terrible consequences of not defending their individual liberties against totalitarian ideologues with anti-democratic agendas.
Called a Jahrhundert-Dokumentby the German press when it was published in its original language in 2011—a vital historical document that helps to interpret a particular era—Kellner’s observations shine an uncompromising light on our own era as well. It is impossible to avoid the disturbing parallels between then and now: the resurgence of a menacing totalitarianism; the use of terror to bring political change; the bombing of residential areas; the indiscriminate murder of women and children; obliterating historical buildings and monuments; declaring that their victims were responsible for the attacks against them; and resorting to the age-old stratagem of blaming the Jews for everything. To forge their master race and master nation, the Nazis placed young boys and girls into pre-military youth organizations. “At ten they feel the breath of militarism and are not released from its claws until the mass grave,” wrote Kellner in April 1943. Seventy years later similar iniquities are with us in the child-soldiers in the Central African Republic and children fitted for suicide vests in the Hamas camps in Gaza.
What amazed Kellner was how the educated and cultural elite of Germany embraced Hitler’s vision of a Greater Germany, though they knew from Hitler’s Mein Kampfonly an iron fist and war could attain it. “The vast majority of intellectual leaders—with university professors in the forefront—shoved aside everything they had previously stood up for and taught, and devoted themselves entirely to the new political direction,” Kellner wrote in June 1941. “They exalted in a servile and spineless way everything the Party prescribed for them.”
But the blame was not the Germans’ alone, Kellner knew, and he railed against the leaders of the democratic nations, particularly in France and England, who could have stopped Hitler long before the war. He considered Neville Chamberlain a “pathetic nincompoop” for believing Hitler’s artful pledges of peace while building up a massive array of armaments in violation of the Versailles Treaty. In May 1940 he wrote: “The Western powers will carry the historical guilt for not promptly providing the most intensive preventative measures against Germany’s incessant politics of aggression.”
Compounding their negligence before the war was England and France’s year-long inertia after they declared war on Germany, their “Phoney War” that allowed the German Luftwaffe to control the skies and let panzer divisions roll unhindered through one European nation after another. “By the time these Englishmen wake up, the greater part of Europe will be a heap of rubble,” declared Kellner on May 29, 1940. He lambasted Americans as “idiots” for thinking they could remain neutral and talk Hitler out of his thirst for territory. The day after Pearl Harbor, Kellner asked: “Will the isolationists in the U.S.A. now open their eyes? What a delusion these cowardly people were under. How can you stand on the sidelines claiming neutrality during this gigantic fight for human dignity and freedom—when in actuality that places you on the side of the terrorist nations?”
Another parallel for today is with the irrational anti-Semitism rampant in the Third Reich that led to the Holocaust. Threats to destroy modern Israel herald an even greater catastrophe. In his natural sympathy for Jews, Kellner displays an outstanding sense of fairness and justice and a unique moral character. At the beginning of his diary, in October 1939—when he already was aware Jews were marked for extermination—he wrote, “If the Jews, who over the centuries contributed demonstrable achievements in the economic life for the total development of the nation, can be made a people without rights, then that is an act unworthy of a cultured nation. The curse of this evil deed will indelibly rest on the entire German people.” And in December 1941, when he learned Jews were being transported from Germany to concentration camps: “This cruel, despicable, and sadistic treatment against the Jews that has lasted now several years—with its final goal of extermination—is the biggest stain on the honor of Germany.”
On more than one occasion Kellner came close to being sent to a concentration camp himself for speaking out against the regime. “Kellner’s attitude exerts a bad influence on the population,” a Nazi official named Ernst Mönnig wrote, “and he should be made to disappear.” Kellner’s wife, Pauline, who refused to join any of the Nazi women’s organizations, would be imprisoned with him. To protect her, and to remain free to finish his self-imposed task, he restricted his thoughts to his diary. However, he collected leaflets dropped by Allied bombers and surreptitiously placed them around town and at the train station where he knew Nazi Party members would be. “I placed them where wavering Party members would find them,” he explained. Among the hundreds of newspaper clippings pasted into his diary are several announcing court judgments against people caught with leaflets: they were all death sentences. Despite that, Kellner would not let the Nazis have the last word.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.
“TRUMP DOESN’T ONLY HATE VETERANS, HE HATES FIRST RESPONDER HEROES,” tweeted actress Debra Messing in reaction to the Daily News report.
Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.
“From the administration whose identity is built on claims of honoring first responders,” Julie Cohen, director of the RBG documentary, wrote on Twitter.
“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Army veteran and advocate Paul Rieckoff wrote on Twitter. “Trump did NOTHING to push for the extension of #Zadroga last year.”
“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.
