Earlier today, during an opponent hearing for HB68—which would prohibit medical professionals from providing any gender-affirming care to trans or non-binary youth 17 or younger, regardless of parental consent, current careplan, diagnoses, or the best interests of the patient—Rep. Lipps misgendered a witness and stated that “there is no anti-trans legislation in Ohio,” when they testified that their friends were moving to more trans-affirming states. Lipps said, “no one is leaving Ohio” due to anti-trans policies and legislation. We know that’s not true.

I’ve been a transgender advocate for over 20 years; lots has changed over time in the content of the questions people ask me. Recently, in my liberal enclaves, the tone has changed, too. From curiosity to pity as each day a new law passes in a new state, restricting, outlawing, banning. Lately, the most common question I get is: Why are transgender people the current political football?
A few years ago, when transgender girls in sports first made the headlines, I could point to a situation in Connecticut where two transgender athletes were winning races in girls high school track. Cause, effect. It wasn’t pleasant, but it was at least a response to stimulus. Now, though, there’s nothing to point to. No stand-out athletes in most of the states banning transgender girls from sports. No overwhelming wave of children seeking gender-affirming surgery. Nothing. Well, there is one thing: us—our mere existence as transgender people.
In the 1980s, transsexuals were a background presence. They appeared on daytime talk shows, and occasionally were the subject of late-night stand-up. They haunted the end hours, the adult spaces. They were curiosities and punchlines, something to be stared at, laughed at. How’d they get there? Why were they picked out from the array of human spectacles? I didn’t ask these questions; I simply accepted that it was fascinating to look at a man in a dress. Because that’s essentially how transsexuals and transvestites were presented: men in dresses. The exception to this would be Pat on SNL—an androgynous character who erred toward the masculine.
I think that presentation is a good place to start to comprehend why it is that transgender people are so easily villainized. Back on those daytime talk shows, transexuals and transvestites were presented as people with something to hide. “I never knew my husband was a transvestite, but I kept finding my nylon stockings missing!” would be a typical line from a scandalized wife. Secrecy, shame, duplicitousness. This was for many years the basis of mainstream understanding of the transgender identity and mind. We were one thing pretending to be another.
Double. That’s the word at the core of misunderstanding transgender people. Why we are fascinating, why we are scary. When I try to imagine the mental images held by the lawmakers across the country about what a transgender person is, I think of Norman Bates in Psycho, Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. The 1980s were rife with such movies, like Sleepaway Camp and Dressed to Kill. For adults now in their 40s and 50s, these were the access points for what it meant to be transgender. These horror movies presented transgender women as violent, dangerous, and unstable. There’s sexual fetishism, jealousy, frustration lurking beneath the surface. And, again and again, there’s the narrative of deception and doubleness.
Even the more comedic movies from that era that featured “trans” characters like Tootsie (later Mrs. Doubtfire), presented the same idea of being two things at once. Here, it wasn’t threatening so much as it was convenient. These men wanted something and to get it, they disguised themselves as women.
The narrative about transgender passing is that it is a means to an end. The deception is present, as is the doubleness; movies like these hinge on the revelation of the true identity to resolve the plot. Even more complex and nuanced movies from this era, like The Crying Game, played into the same trope. The most salient feature of a transgender woman is what she is trying to hide.
These are the storylines we carry in our head. The transsexual may have disappeared from daytime talk shows, but transgender women still dominate the horror movie screen. When I work with schools to educate people about transgender identity, I frequently will hear, “You’re the first real transgender person I’ve met.” By which they mean, not on a talk show, not on a movie screen—just a person. For the majority of Americans, transgender people are hypothetical or fictional. Our storylines are supplied by movies, sensationalized. When we move off the screen and into real life, the narrative of deception comes with us.
The lawmakers who are currently passing bills banning transgender athletes from girls’ sports or restricting access to gender-affirming care use the language of protection. They are keeping girls and women safe. They are saving children from abuse. The transgender person is the monster, the danger, the villain. LGBTQ+ activists in Louisiana are celebrating following a vote to kill a proposed gender-affirming care ban for trans youth – thanks to a Republican senator.
State senators voted to strike down Louisiana House Bill 648 on Wednesday (24 May) after a Republican lawmaker crossed the floor to vote with every elected Democrat.
Pharmacist and Republican senator Fred Mills argued prior to the vote that he trusts physicians to make the right decisions for their patients and, as such, saw no need for the bill.
“I always, in my heart of hearts, have believed that a decision should be made by a patient and a physician,” he said.
If passed, the bill would have effectively banned gender-affirming care for under-18s in Louisiana – including the prescription of physically reversible puberty blockers – by imposing sanctions on medical organisations that prescribe them.
It also bans gender-affirming surgeries, despite no medical organisation anywhere in the US performing them on under-18s.
Mills’ decision to vote against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been met with vehement backlash from Republicans and right-wing conservatives such as self-described theocratic fascist Matt Walsh, who said Mills would “regret” the decision.
But, as Mills explained in an interview following the vote, he doesn’t care what Matt Walsh and other critics think.
“Why should I [vote for the bill]?” he said. “They don’t live in District 22. They don’t have a 337 area code. I didn’t run for office to serve those people.”
He explained that a study by the Louisiana Health Department on gender-affirming health care helped influence his decision on the vote.
It found that no gender-affirming procedures were performed on minors under Medicaid between 2017 to 2021, and that prescriptions of puberty blockers were also exceedingly rare.
“My decision was really, really based on the numbers,” Mills continued. “All the testimony I heard by the proponents that children are getting mutilated, I didn’t see it in the statistics.”
Senior officials at the Human Rights Campaign commended Mills’ decision and the subsequent killing of the bill, saying that Louisiana lawmakers “did the right thing today”.
State legislative director Cathryn Oakley said: “They heard the voices of transgender kids, their families, and medical experts who bravely shared their stories and chose to treat transgender children with dignity and respect.
“Gender-affirming care is recommended by the entire mainstream American medical establishment for transgender youth. Age-appropriate, medically necessary, gender-affirming healthcare saves lives.”
The Senate is yet to vote on two more anti-LGBTQ+ bills – HB466, a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ copycat, and HB81, which would force schools to misgender trans children.
Democratic governor of Louisiana John Bel Edwards has condemned the bills, saying that they would increase “suicidal ideation” among trans children.
“These kinds of bills do not tend to help with that,” he said in a press conference on 11 May.
“In fact, they aggravate the situation and then cause it to be worse.”

I began spending my weekend hours at the University of Utah Medical School Library to try to learn more.
I apparently became a regular there.
I came upon the opportunity to determine more than I ever expected.
I had to prove that I could keep pace with real medical topics not available to anyone other that practising physicians. They accepted me as a physician amongst them – they actually called me ‘Doctor’. My most profound education came the weekend when I attended a hand surgery training session; the instructing physician assigned me to prosect and demonstrate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to the class, I did so nervously and successfully. Thank you to the woman who contributed her body to science.
I also completed a teacher certification program (Autumn Quarter 1983). Elie Wiesel was a guest lecturer. I remain in awe of him, the opportunity to sit next to him during one session as our group debated the international topics of the day. I have come to appreciate those months as the years pass.

Wow!
I have never met him, but do know people who have been to him or are on his waiting list. They seem to report being satisfied.
Each person must do research sufficient to become comfortable with their surgeon. What may be critical to one may be irrelevant to another.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.
“TRUMP DOESN’T ONLY HATE VETERANS, HE HATES FIRST RESPONDER HEROES,” tweeted actress Debra Messing in reaction to the Daily News report.
Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.
“From the administration whose identity is built on claims of honoring first responders,” Julie Cohen, director of the RBG documentary, wrote on Twitter.
“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Army veteran and advocate Paul Rieckoff wrote on Twitter. “Trump did NOTHING to push for the extension of #Zadroga last year.”
“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.
