Please share what is happening to us in Florida. Text of thread:
Yes – this is what is happening in Florida due to SB 254, which was signed into law on Tuesday 5/17/2023, taking immediate effect. This immediately cut off 80%+ of adult trans people in Florida from having their HRT refilled, because SB 254 uniquely prohibits only nurse practitioners from prescribing only gender-affirming medications.
This has already been in effect for 7 days now.
Trans adults in Florida have already been cut off from their HRT refills for a week now, including those of us who have been stable on these medications for years or decades.
This is VERY different from the general situation of trans youth care bans in 19 states, many still working their way through the courts.
This has *already* happened, to *all* of us: all trans adults in the third most populous state in the US.
The number of trans adults on HRT massively exceeds the sliver of the population that are under 18 and are prescribed puberty blockers or hormone therapy.
These laws, advanced under the pretext of ‘protecting children’, are now directly impacting a far larger group of people who are not children and are not subject to those pretextual concerns.
Other arguments about withholding public Medicaid funding for transition treatment also do not apply here: SB 254 does not even allow receiving this care through private insurance or paying cash out of pocket. The care isn’t simply not covered – the care itself cannot be provided regardless.
What is happening in Florida requires special attention above the situation of trans youth care bans nationally. This is having a vastly larger impact quantifiably.
It will have worse impacts qualitatively as well: adults are responsible for taking care of and protecting trans kids and making sure they do not hurt themselves.
Whereas as a trans adult, we have no one standing guard at the brink but our own self and the void to which we are accountable.
These are the facts as they stand right now. These are the facts as they have stood for a WEEK and NO ONE nationally is putting any attention on this because there are 19 trans youth care bans all across the country going on, along with everything else targeting trans people and the LGBT community broadly.
This is a specific harm that is happening now and has been happening for 168 hours.
It is not a hypothetical issue to raise awareness of, as if it were at the stage of some proposal that needs to be fought back. This has already happened and is happening right now. Active harm is happening until this law is rolled back.
For all of Florida’s history since the inception of the applicable regulatory and licensing bodies, nurse practitioners have been allowed to prescribe hormone therapy, testosterone blockers and other relevant gender-affirming medications.
That has been the case since I moved here in 2011. There was no reason why this wouldn’t be the case. It’s also the case in every other state.
This new law is a carveout of prescriptions when used for one purpose, gender-affirming care, from nurse practitioners specifically, in a way that has never been done before. It affects all ages.
It has immediately obstructed access to HRT prescription refills for more than 80% of TRANS ADULTS in Florida.
It has also prohibited first appointments for HRT via telehealth with in-state or out-of-state MDs or DOs – first appointments must be in person. This will require expensive and time-consuming travel that is beyond most trans people’s means: driving to Georgia from Florida can take 8 hours.
This was an intentional targeting of almost all trans adults in Florida, and the means by which we have received our generic, FDA-approved medications for years. And it included closing every possible door that would let us find another way to keep taking the medications we have taken for…

The Boards contain at least one member of the anti-trans Society for Evidence-based Gender Medicine (SEGM).
Two other members were appointed by Ron DeSantis after they had submitted a letter to the Boards in favor of a trans youth care ban and in favor of anti-trans conversion therapy.

No trans adults seeking to start HRT can begin treatment after 5/17/2023 until these informed consent forms are available.
Trans adults in Florida have historically been able to start HRT at a time that their own provider determines is appropriate.
Existing prescription:
MDs/DOs can continue to renew existing HRT prescriptions for adults
Note: This remaining sliver is the only way trans adults in Florida can access their prescribed HRT as of 5/17/2023.

Latest update, May 25 2023, on the status of the adult trans care ban SB 254 in Florida. It’s being reported by trans people across the state that over the past week they cannot reliably refill their existing prescriptions either. This now leaves no possible route for trans adults in Florida to be prescribed HRT or continue taking their long-term prescribed HRT. Absolutely none of this was the case for trans adults in Florida, ever, before last Wednesday. This is a direct infliction of harm on thousands of trans Floridians in the third most populous state in the country.

According to the Washington Post’s fact checkers on May 1, “for the president’s first 100 days, he averaged 4.9 claims a day… since we last updated this tally two months ago, the president has averaged about 9 claims a day.”

White cops are murdering more than two Black people each week. There are no prosecutions, no convictions, no sentencing.
On the very day of Chauvin’s conviction on three counts of murder, there was a White cop who murdered a Black man within a couple miles of that court house. No charges filed against the White cop.

As much as I would hope that no other member of Our Community fear violence, I suspect that these acts will continue:
– violence committed inside our homes
– violence committed at our places of camaraderie
– violence committed through the judicial system.
I vow to post – expose – these reported acts of anti-LGBT violence to my Facebook page as ‘Public’. Join me. Preaching to the choir gets us nowhere.

A transgender woman has been shot dead in public after an altercation in Portland, Oregon.
Gigi Pierce, 28, became the 11th trans person to be killed in the US this year when she died on May 21.
That number may yet rise when police determine the cause of death of 39-year-old Nicole Hall, whose body was found in White Rock Creek in Dallas, Texas, earlier this month.
Sophia Grace Adler, 33, was arrested at the scene in downtown Portland and later charged with murder.
She pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.
Pierce, from Boise in Idaho, was found lying wounded on the side of the street by emergency staff, but died within minutes of them getting to her, according to local TV channel KATU.
Those who knew her on the street have said that Pierce made it her mission to protect other homeless women.
Amber, a friend of Pierce, said she was present when the shooting happened.
“She died in my arms,” she said.
“I heard Gigi say: ‘Don’t touch me,’” added Amber. “And the woman came up and hit Gigi in the face with her purse.
“That kinda set Gigi off. Gigi went to hit her, pulled back to hit her, and the next thing I know my ear’s ringing.
“There had been a gunshot. It all happened so fast.
“It always does. It all happened so fast.”
Sergeant Chris Burley of the Portland City Police backed up this account.
He said: “We do believe that prior to the shooting there had been some type of disagreement or disturbance that was going on that led up to the shooting.”
Josie Deleon-Summa, who got to know both Pierce and her suspected killer, paid tribute to the victim.
“Gigi was the kind of person that was just full of life, always trying to help somebody,” said Deleon-Summa.
She added that if Adler did shoot her, it was out of character.
“Something happened last night to make her snap,” she said. “But she’s a good kid. Just misunderstood. I don’t know exactly what happened between the two.”
A total of 28 trans people were killed in the US in 2017, the highest number on record.
The current rate of trans killings in 2018 is the same as last year.

THE WORLD HAS LOVED, HATED AND ENVIED THE U.S. NOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE PITY IT
Over more than two centuries, the United States has stirred a very wide range of feelings in the rest of the world: love and hatred, fear and hope, envy and contempt, awe and anger. But there is one emotion that has never been directed towards the US until now: pity.
However bad things are for most other rich democracies, it is hard not to feel sorry for Americans. Most of them did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. Yet they are locked down with a malignant narcissist who, instead of protecting his people from Covid-19, has amplified its lethality. The country Trump promised to make great again has never in its history seemed so pitiful.
Will American prestige ever recover from this shameful episode? The US went into the coronavirus crisis with immense advantages: precious weeks of warning about what was coming, the world’s best concentration of medical and scientific expertise, effectively limitless financial resources, a military complex with stunning logistical capacity and most of the world’s leading technology corporations. Yet it managed to make itself the global epicentre of the pandemic.
As the American writer George Packer puts it in the current edition of the Atlantic, “The United States reacted … like Pakistan or Belarus – like a country with shoddy infrastructure and a dysfunctional government whose leaders were too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering.”
It is one thing to be powerless in the face of a natural disaster, quite another to watch vast power being squandered in real time – wilfully, malevolently, vindictively. It is one thing for governments to fail (as, in one degree or another, most governments did), quite another to watch a ruler and his supporters actively spread a deadly virus. Trump, his party and Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News became vectors of the pestilence.
The grotesque spectacle of the president openly inciting people (some of them armed) to take to the streets to oppose the restrictions that save lives is the manifestation of a political death wish. What are supposed to be daily briefings on the crisis, demonstrative of national unity in the face of a shared challenge, have been used by Trump merely to sow confusion and division. They provide a recurring horror show in which all the neuroses that haunt the American subconscious dance naked on live TV.
If the plague is a test, its ruling political nexus ensured that the US would fail it at a terrible cost in human lives. In the process, the idea of the US as the world’s leading nation – an idea that has shaped the past century – has all but evaporated.
Other than the Trump impersonator Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, who is now looking to the US as the exemplar of anything other than what not to do? How many people in Düsseldorf or Dublin are wishing they lived in Detroit or Dallas?
It is hard to remember now but, even in 2017, when Trump took office, the conventional wisdom in the US was that the Republican Party and the broader framework of US political institutions would prevent him from doing too much damage. This was always a delusion, but the pandemic has exposed it in the most savage ways.
Abject surrender
What used to be called mainstream conservatism has not absorbed Trump – he has absorbed it. Almost the entire right-wing half of American politics has surrendered abjectly to him. It has sacrificed on the altar of wanton stupidity the most basic ideas of responsibility, care and even safety.
Thus, even at the very end of March, 15 Republican governors had failed to order people to stay at home or to close non-essential businesses. In Alabama, for example, it was not until April 3rd that governor Kay Ivey finally issued a stay-at-home order.
In Florida, the state with the highest concentration of elderly people with underlying conditions, governor Ron DeSantis, a Trump mini-me, kept the beach resorts open to students travelling from all over the US for spring break parties. Even on April 1st, when he issued restrictions, DeSantis exempted religious services and “recreational activities”.
Georgia governor Brian Kemp, when he finally issued a stay-at-home order on April 1st, explained: “We didn’t know that [the virus can be spread by people without symptoms] until the last 24 hours.”
This is not mere ignorance – it is deliberate and homicidal stupidity. There is, as the demonstrations this week in US cities have shown, plenty of political mileage in denying the reality of the pandemic. It is fuelled by Fox News and far-right internet sites, and it reaps for these politicians millions of dollars in donations, mostly (in an ugly irony) from older people who are most vulnerable to the coronavirus.
It draws on a concoction of conspiracy theories, hatred of science, paranoia about the “deep state” and religious providentialism (God will protect the good folks) that is now very deeply infused in the mindset of the American right.
Trump embodies and enacts this mindset, but he did not invent it. The US response to the coronavirus crisis has been paralysed by a contradiction that the Republicans have inserted into the heart of US democracy. On the one hand, they want to control all the levers of governmental power. On the other they have created a popular base by playing on the notion that government is innately evil and must not be trusted.
The contradiction was made manifest in two of Trump’s statements on the pandemic: on the one hand that he has “total authority”, and on the other that “I don’t take responsibility at all”. Caught between authoritarian and anarchic impulses, he is incapable of coherence.
Fertile ground
But this is not just Donald Trump. The crisis has shown definitively that Trump’s presidency is not an aberration. It has grown on soil long prepared to receive it. The monstrous blossoming of misrule has structure and purpose and strategy behind it.
There are very powerful interests who demand “freedom” in order to do as they like with the environment, society and the economy. They have infused a very large part of American culture with the belief that “freedom” is literally more important than life. My freedom to own assault weapons trumps your right not to get shot at school. Now, my freedom to go to the barber (“I Need a Haircut” read one banner this week in St Paul, Minnesota) trumps your need to avoid infection.
Usually when this kind of outlandish idiocy is displaying itself, there is the comforting thought that, if things were really serious, it would all stop. People would sober up. Instead, a large part of the US has hit the bottle even harder.
And the president, his party and their media allies keep supplying the drinks. There has been no moment of truth, no shock of realisation that the antics have to end. No one of any substance on the US right has stepped in to say: get a grip, people are dying here.
That is the mark of how deep the trouble is for the US – it is not just that Trump has treated the crisis merely as a way to feed tribal hatreds but that this behaviour has become normalised. When the freak show is live on TV every evening, and the star is boasting about his ratings, it is not really a freak show any more. For a very large and solid bloc of Americans, it is reality.
And this will get worse before it gets better. Trump has at least eight more months in power. In his inaugural address in 2017, he evoked “American carnage” and promised to make it stop. But now that the real carnage has arrived, he is revelling in it. He is in his element.
As things get worse, he will pump more hatred and falsehood, more death-wish defiance of reason and decency, into the groundwater. If a new administration succeeds him in 2021, it will have to clean up the toxic dump he leaves behind. If he is re-elected, toxicity will have become the lifeblood of American politics.
Either way, it will be a long time before the rest of the world can imagine America being great again.

Between when President Donald Trump assumed office in January 2017 and the end of April, the average number of public false or misleading statements he has made per day has been increasing. According to the Washington Post’s fact checkers on May 1, “for the president’s first 100 days, he averaged 4.9 claims a day… since we last updated this tally two months ago, the president has averaged about 9 claims a day.”
This is a significant rise. Our calculations suggest that if the current escalation rate remains steady, by the end of his term the president could be making as many as 19 public false statements a day, on average.
To psychologists interested in the science of lying, Trump’s increasing mendacity presents an interesting question: What might be causing this growth?
We first considered whether the increase could be explained by reporting bias. In other words, perhaps more falsehoods have been reported over time, rather than actually presented by the president. We found this explanation to be unlikely, as the Washington Post fact checkers stated they have scrutinized every single tweet, speech, statement and interview by the president since last January. (Importantly, this analysis is confined to public statements and it is difficult to know whether there has been a change in Trump’s total falsehoods.)
Emotion plays an important role in constraining dishonesty. If we feel bad when we lie, we are less likely to do so.
So if not reporting bias, what can explain the temporal increase of these falsehoods? Perhaps past lies needed to be covered up by more lies, or repeated falsehoods were eventually perceived as true making subsequent repetition likely. Or maybe falsehoods led to positive consequences, reinforcing such behavior further. These are all plausible explanations. But our research points to yet another intriguing explanation — a biological process called emotional adaptation.
Emotion plays an important role in constraining dishonesty. If we feel bad when we lie, we are less likely to do so. But if this uncomfortable feeling were to magically disappear, research suggests we would in turn lie more. In one study, students who were given a pill called a beta-blocker, which reduces emotional arousal, were more likely to cheat on an exam than students who were given a placebo. In other words, without that uncomfortable physiological feeling that accompanies dishonest behavior, people were more likely to cheat.
Research we conducted at University College London with our colleagues Dan Ariely and Stephanie Lazzaro, which was published in 2016 in the journal Nature Neuroscience, showed that the intensity of the emotional response people experience when they act dishonestly is reduced every time they lie. And this reduction (which scientists call emotional adaptation) makes them likely to lie more over time.
In our experiment, which was funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Center for Advanced Hindsight, we gave a group of 80 individuals the opportunity to lie again and again in a financial task in order to gain money at another person’s expense. We found that the volunteers started with relatively small lies, cheating by only a few cents, but slowly over the course of the experiment lied more and more. While they were doing so we recorded their brain activity using a brain imaging scanner. We found that the emotional network in the brain responded less with each additional lie. The greater the drop in the brain’s sensitivity to dishonesty, the more people lied the next time they had a chance.
Repeated dishonesty is a bit like a perfume you apply over and over. At first you easily detect the powerful scent of a new perfume. But over time and with more applications you can hardly sense its presence, so you apply more liberally. This happens because neurons in your olfactory bulb desensitize to the smell of the perfume. Similarly, it appears that our response to our own acts of dishonesty is strong at first, but over time decreases. Like students taking beta-blockers, your capacity for being dishonest increases.
Repeated dishonesty is a bit like a perfume you apply over and over. At first you easily detect the powerful scent of a new perfume. But over time and with more applications you can hardly sense its presence.
The picture becomes more alarming when we consider that individuals adapt not only to their own dishonesty but also to that of others. Research Harvard professors Francesca Gino and Max Bazerman shows that people are less likely to criticize the unethical actions of others when such behavior increases gradually over time. Politically speaking, this suggests that voters (and perhaps even the president’s own advisors) may desensitize to the president’s falsehoods in the same way that they do to overused perfume, making them less likely to act to correct this pattern of behavior. The absence of sanctions could in turn be interpreted as a “green light” by the president.
Indeed, in a recent study of 2,500 U.S. citizens, the psychologist Birony Swire-Thompson found that Trump supporters’ intentions to vote for him were not affected by learning that the president had provided false information. And a recent Gallup poll showed that while the percentage of Americans who believe the president is “honest and trustworthy” has decreased from 46 percent in February to 36 percent in April, his approval ratings remained relatively stable. Indeed, in the past few months his approval rating continues to rise.

As much as I would hope that no other member of Our Community fear violence, I suspect that these acts will continue:
– violence committed inside our homes
– violence committed at our places of camaraderie
– violence committed through the judicial system.
I vow to post – expose – these reported acts of anti-LGBT violence to my Facebook page as ‘Public’. Join me. Preaching to the choir gets us nowhere.
These attacks originate through Crooked Drumpf and his plethora of Drumpfians and Deplorables. Posting this as ‘Public’ will expose you Drumpfians and Deplorables:
– you are doing this
– you are committing mass violence, mass murder.
I am calling you out:
– you Drumpfians and Deplorables among my ‘Friend’ list
– you Drumpfians and Deplorables of the public.
You don’t like that I am calling you out? Then do something about it! Prove it! Do something positive to change it.
– same as you exhort Muslims to oppose ‘Islamic Terrorism’
– same as you exhort Christians to oppose ‘Christian Terrorism’ (crickets).
This time, it is you – Drumpfians and Deplorables – your group who are the ‘TERRORISTS’.

Alan L. Hart (birthplace – Halls Summit, Kansas) was an influential American physician, radiologist, and tuberculosis researcher. Hart’s was the first documented transgender male transition in the United States. His surgery occurred in 1917–18 at the University of Oregon Medical School and he lived the rest of his life as a man. Hart married his first wife, Inez Stark, in 1918 and his second wife, Edna Ruddick in 1925. Alan also served for eight years as vice president for his local Unitarian Church council.
Hart pioneered the use of x-ray photography in tuberculosis (TB) detection which helped implement early TB screening programs that saved thousands of lives. In the early 20th century, TB was the biggest killer in America. Hart was among the first physicians to document how TB spread via the circulatory system, causing lesions on the kidneys, brain, and spine, eventually resulting in death. Hart was extremely educated attending the University of Oregon, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

Transgender woman shot dead in vicious attack becomes 11th killed this year

A transgender woman has been shot dead in public after an altercation in Portland, Oregon.
Gigi Pierce, 28, became the 11th trans person to be killed in the US this year when she died on May 21.
That number may yet rise when police determine the cause of death of 39-year-old Nicole Hall, whose body was found in White Rock Creek in Dallas, Texas, earlier this month.
Sophia Grace Adler, 33, was arrested at the scene in downtown Portland and later charged with murder.

She pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.
Pierce, from Boise in Idaho, was found lying wounded on the side of the street by emergency staff, but died within minutes of them getting to her, according to local TV channel KATU.
Those who knew her on the street have said that Pierce made it her mission to protect other homeless women.
Amber, a friend of Pierce, said she was present when the shooting happened.
“She died in my arms,” she said.

“I heard Gigi say: ‘Don’t touch me,’” added Amber. “And the woman came up and hit Gigi in the face with her purse.
“That kinda set Gigi off. Gigi went to hit her, pulled back to hit her, and the next thing I know my ear’s ringing.
“There had been a gunshot. It all happened so fast.
“It always does. It all happened so fast.”
Sergeant Chris Burley of the Portland City Police backed up this account.
He said: “We do believe that prior to the shooting there had been some type of disagreement or disturbance that was going on that led up to the shooting.”

Josie Deleon-Summa, who got to know both Pierce and her suspected killer, paid tribute to the victim.
“Gigi was the kind of person that was just full of life, always trying to help somebody,” said Deleon-Summa.
She added that if Adler did shoot her, it was out of character.
“Something happened last night to make her snap,” she said. “But she’s a good kid. Just misunderstood. I don’t know exactly what happened between the two.”
A total of 28 trans people were killed in the US in 2017, the highest number on record.
The current rate of trans killings in 2018 is the same as last year.

Harvey’s murder followed the killings of Christa Leigh Steele-Knudslien, who founded the Miss Trans America pageant, and Viccky Gutierrez, who was burned to death in Los Angeles.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.
