The Voice of America’s two top executives stepped down Monday following Senate confirmation of President Trump’s pick to run the agency that oversees the international broadcaster.
The resignation of Director Amanda Bennett and Deputy Director Sandy Sugawara was announced as Michael Pack, a conservative filmmaker and supporter of the president, was set to take over as head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
In a farewell message, Bennett thanked staff members for their “dedication to our mission” but also alluded to potential concerns about editorial independence at VOA under the new Trump appointee.
“Nothing about you, your passion, your mission or your integrity changes,” said Bennett, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who previously worked as executive editor at Bloomberg News and spent more than two decades at The Wall Street Journal. “Michael Pack swore before Congress to respect and honor the firewall that guarantees VOA’s independence, which in turn plays the single most important role in the stunning trust our audiences around the world have in us.”
Sugawara, a veteran of The Washington Post and UPI before coming to VOA, lauded the “many brave, heroic journalists at VOA who believe passionately in the power of a free press.”
Trump is a frequent critic of the publicly-funded broadcaster. In April, for example, the White House criticized VOA for its story about the reopening of Wuhan, China, where the COVID-19 outbreak first emerged.
Taxpayer-funded VOA, which began in 1942, provides news and information in more than 40 languages, with an estimated weekly global audience of more than 280 million.
Despite being an agency of the U.S. government, the organization’s charter requires VOA to be “accurate, objective and comprehensive” and reflect the nation as a whole. Pack is seen by critics as someone who might push more favorable coverage of the Trump administration at VOA, jeopardizing its editorial independence.
In a letter to members of the House Foreign Relations Committee in late April, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press urged that VOA’s autonomy be preserved.

On Monday, President Trump’s long-deferred pick to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media finally started work after a bruising, two-year Senate confirmation battle.
By the end of Wednesday, Michael Pack had achieved a clean sweep of the top offices of every division he oversees — including venerable news outlets like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe.
WASHINGTON, DC – Less than five months from the U.S. elections, the Trump administration with the support of Republican members in the U.S. Senate, has taken control of the country’s extensive media networks around the globe.
Trump appointee Michael Pack, the new CEO of The U.S. Agency for Global Media, in his first week has purged the heads of almost all the major networks. while the top two officials of Voice America handed in their resignations earlier in the week. Pack, according to The Washington Post, was recommended for the post by Steve Bannon, the co-founder of the far-right Breitbart News who later served as senior counselor to Trump.
“He’s my guy, and I pushed him hard,” Bannon said in an interview.
Pack has fired the heads of the Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Marti servicing Cuba, and the Open Technology Fund.

Abortion seems to be a popular topic lately. I’ve spent some time praying about if or when I should share my thoughts. As a reproductive justice advocate, I’ve been quiet long enough.
Throughout my ministry and life, I have had the privilege of sitting with people who have a variety of experiences surrounding pregnancy, miscarriages, infertility, parenthood, and abortion. I am so thankful and humbled that each person trusted me with some of the most intimate details of their life.
From my experience, people who chose abortion as part of an unplanned pregnancy, make that decision and act on that decision very early on. I’ve heard so many powerful stories of women who made this decision. Sadly, these women feel that they have to justify their decision. All that matters to me is that you are empowered over your own body.
More often than not, women who have an abortion in their second or third trimester, are often doing it out of a place of deep sorrow and great loss— that means there has been some kind of anomaly that was experienced and there is not a sustainable life inside the woman any more. There are times that a woman experiences a miscarriage and her body may need assistance to complete the process. One way that happens is through a D&C. A D&C is medically a method of abortion. Places that limit access to abortions, limit access to medical care in the case of miscarriages.
These anti-abortion laws that are being passed are simply immoral. We continually rip away access to medical care, dump crippling amounts of debt on students, blame the poor for their own poverty, demand longer work days and weeks, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Every 15 minutes, somewhere in the world a woman dies following complications from an illegal abortion.
This is roughly 60,000 deaths each year due to abortion bans. The deaths and serious injuries from these abortions are almost all preventable through sexuality education, contraception and safe, legal procedures.
However, Malta still prohibits abortion in all circumstances and Poland only allows the termination of a pregnancy when a mother’s life is at risk or it is a result of rape.
Worryingly, a backlash on women’s rights is gaining momentum, eroding existing rights and endangering women’s health. Extreme-right activists and anti-gender movements cannot stand increasingly independent and powerful women. The right to legal abortion is a key target of their attacks.
A conservative-led resolution was adopted instead stating that sexual and reproductive health and rights fall under the national competences.
Hard-won rights are not won forever.
There will always be people who want to take them back.

Hmmm.
This might ruffle feathers of those who knew me from my high school years – especially during my year at Dasahori.
I lived at Greece during my 10th Grade and 11th Grade (1971 – 1973). Voice of America radio was popular there – amongst the Greek people and the Americans.
My father listened to VOA – mostly its Jazz music shows.
I admit frequently listening to the Pop music shows. I recall listening to news specials about the last Moon landing.
Neither my father nor I trusted VOA news. Especially once Watergate became the scandal. VOA did NOT report un-biased news – we heard little real news about Nixon, his corruption, his crimes. Point of fact, we obtained great news reporting from BBC. We also exchanged news with our Greek neighbours who read their Greek newspapers.
Drumpf will be as Nixon – he will suppress the Truth.
Foreign audiences realise exactly what Drumpf is doing – Propaganda to support its corrupted Dictator.

“Journalists should report the facts, but VOA has instead amplified Beijing’s propaganda,” the White House website read. “This week, VOA called China’s Wuhan lockdown a successful ‘model’ copied by much of the world — and then tweeted out video of the Communist government’s celebratory light show marking the quarantine’s alleged end.”
Trump isn’t the first president to be critical of VOA’s coverage, but he has been perhaps the most vocal.
At an April 15 White House news briefing, the president lambasted VOA’s coverage.
“If you heard what’s coming out of the Voice of America, it’s disgusting. What – things they say are disgusting toward our country,” Trump said. “And Michael Pack would get in and do a great job.”
Earlier this month the Senate approved Pack — who is close to Steve Bannon, the former top Trump aide and ex-executive chairman of the right-wing Breitbart News — to lead USAGM on a nearly party-line vote, with only one Democrat joining Republicans to approve the nomination. The vote was delayed because of a still ongoing investigation into whether Pack misused funds at Public Media Lab, a non-profit he ran.

“That Mr. Pack took this drastic measure in his first week on the job is shocking, and we have deep concerns that he takes the helm of a critical agency with the intent to prioritize the Trump administration’s political whims over protecting and promoting independent reporting, which is a pillar of freedom and democracy,” Congresswoman Nita Lowey, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, and Congressman Eliot L. Engel, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, both Democrats, said in a joint statement released on Thursday.
Pack did not give specific reasons for each sacking, saying he was doing what his authority as CEO of the USAGM entitled him to do.
Lowey and Engel followed up Thursday’s statement by sending a letter to Park on Friday demanding all documents related to the firings including performance reviews, and the processes undertaken for the mass terminations be provided to Congress. They also took issue with the alleged failure of the newly-installed Park to consult with Congress.
“In your introductory email to U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) staff, you stated that you had three broad goals as you join the Agency. In the third goal, you acknowledged that bipartisan support created your position of CEO and that you would confer extensively with Agency staff and consult with all stakeholders, including Congress. Unfortunately, your actions this week came without any such consultations and undermined any sense of bipartisanship, the pair wrote.
We take seriously our responsibility to provide oversight of the USAGM and to ensure it is adequately resourced to fulfill its mandate in providing fair, independent, ethical reporting to global audiences. We expect you to do the same, and not to put political priorities over your responsibility to advance the USAGMs core mission, Lower and Engel said.
The heads of the hugely-respected Voice of America, Director Amanda Bennett, and Deputy Director Sandy Sugawara, quit on Monday.
“Mr. Pack has gone on a wholesale firing spree, removing the heads of the networks, dissolving their corporate boards, only to replace them with unqualified political people, fundamentally undermining the mission and work of the organization. It’s now obvious why the White House wanted Pack so badly, so they can transform the agency into their own personal mouthpiece,” Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Thursday. “This is a blow from which it may never recover. Once the credibility is gone, no one will ever trust a report from Radio Free Europe, Radio Marti, nor trust the tools of the Open Technology Fund,” he said.
Lowey and Engel in their statement said Pack replaced the corporate boards “with new boards comprising himself, his chief of staff, Trump Administration appointees, and the senior counsel of an organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated an anti-LGBTQ hate group.”
Alberto Fernandez, who led the Middle East Broadcasting Networks, said he was proud of the work the networks did during his three-year tenure and was honored to have worked with talented journalists in the United States, Dubai, Beirut and elsewhere. He also pointed to the ongoing challenges USAGM agencies face in getting news to the viewers, listeners and readers around the world.
“Wish the incoming people at USAGM well,” Fernandez tweeted Wednesday. “I hope they know what they are doing. They have an immediate opportunity to make a difference. Yesterday the Iraqi government shut down Radio Sawa transmitters in Baghdad, Basra and Karbala and threatened to seize USG property.”
Earlier Wednesday, Pack sent his first communication to VOA employees since being confirmed by the Senate last week, pledging in an email to uphold its mandated role of providing independent worldwide journalism even though it is a U.S. government-funded agency.
Pack wrote that he is “fully committed to honoring VOA’s charter … and the independence of our heroic journalists around the world.”
He was nominated by President Donald Trump to lead USAGM more than two years ago. But with solid Democratic opposition to his appointment, the Republican-controlled Senate voted only two weeks ago to approve a three-year term for Pack to head USAGM.
The vote proceeded even though the Washington, D.C., attorney general’s office announced last month that its office is investigating whether Pack illegally moved money from a nonprofit group to his profit-making film company.
In recent weeks, Trump has criticized VOA for its news coverage of China during the coronavirus crisis. When asked about the Pack nomination on May 15, Trump said, “Voice of America is run in a terrible manner. They’re not the Voice of America. They’re the opposite of the Voice of America.”
Pack made no mention of Trump or the controversy in his email to staff. Nor did he say who he plans to name as VOA’s director.
Bennett was a staunch advocate for VOA’s independent journalism, rebuffing Trump’s recent criticism and defending the U.S.-funded news agency’s mission and reporting.
“We export the First Amendment to people around the world who have no other access to factual, truthful, believable information,” she said. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
“That’s why more than 80% of our 280 million audience in 47 languages in more than 60 countries say they find our work credible,” Bennett said.
Some outside watchdogs have voiced fears about Pack’s tenure at USAGM, citing his record as a conservative filmmaker and associate of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and suggesting he might not withstand White House pressure for news coverage favorable to Trump.
The New York Times said in an editorial Tuesday, “The specter of turning VOA into a propaganda tool of the White House should be frightening to all Americans, regardless of political leanings.” The editorial concluded, “Mr. Trump wants a bullhorn, not a diplomatic instrument, and he insists on loyalty.”
As Pack took over as chief executive, the directors of the Broadcasting Board of Governors — which formerly controlled VOA and its sister networks — published their own definition of independent journalism in the Federal Register of government actions.
“USAGM-funded networks each enjoy full editorial independence, as that term is defined and understood by best practices of journalism,” the statement said.
“Editorial independence includes, but is not limited to, the fact that only individuals within the network may make any decisions with respect to newsgathering or reporting,” the directors said. “USAGM networks and their employees, including the heads of each network, are fully insulated from any political or other external pressures or processes that would be inconsistent with the highest standards of professional journalism.”
Pack, in his mid-60s, has held previous executive positions at U.S. government international and public media agencies. But in recent years, he told USAGM employees, he has run a private venture, Manifold Productions, that has produced 15 documentaries that have aired in the U.S. on the Public Broadcasting Service.
“These films were also my way of telling America’s story,” he said. “Although making documentaries is very satisfying work, I was eager to return to international broadcasting at this critical juncture in our history.”
He said, “America’s adversaries have stepped up their propaganda and disinformation efforts. They are aggressively promoting their very different visions of the world.”
Pack said he would seek to improve employee morale at USAGM and “examine some of the problems that have surfaced in the media in recent years.”
“Most importantly,” he wrote, “my mission will be to make the agency more effective.”

I clearly mark and identify the sources of narrative that are not my own – usually with their web-site and URL. I paste their copyright tag to their narrative, when I can find it.
I am not a commercial enterprise. I receive nothing from anyone. In fact, I am doing the source a favour by expanding their audience. Maybe they should pay me for new customers and added sales revenue.
I keep copies.
I first thought that just posting a URL at my essays could lose a connection if someone deleted that URL.
That is why I then began copying-and-pasting the actual text of a news article. Certainly, text could not be deleted.
Was I wrong!!!
‘Someone’ is literally going into my posts and deleting what I wrote. ‘They’ deleted the essay that I wrote. ‘They’ deleted the news texts that I copied-and-pasted. ‘They’ deleted the Additional Resources section.
‘They’ deleted the reference to whomever made the Share. Who Shared this post? Did ‘They’ delete this from your page?
‘They’ deleted Edit History. ‘They’ deleted it from the Saved file. ‘They’ even deleted the Facebook trace – there is no record of my posts in my Facebook history logs. It’s as if that post does not exist.

That is dangerous censorship!
Who ever is doing that is making trouble.
This circumstance will go to my web-site where they don’t censor my essays.
This is not funny to me – Powers That Be come into my page and delete what I wrote. That smacks of totalitarian censorship. I fear that we are heading for worse.
Yes – such web-sites as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, whatever, are a private company. BUT – they have evolved into the status as a public utility. Therefore, they must surrender some parochial elements of their private business.
The other alternative is for government agencies to allow individual Internet users direct access to the WWW without those middle market conglomerates. And WHY NOT!
Does the cable or satellite company intrude into the privacy of your home and take scissors to your daily newspaper each morning? Seems that this is what ‘Someone’ is doing to us.

Abortion seems to be a popular topic lately. I’ve spent some time praying about if or when I should share my thoughts. As a reproductive justice advocate, I’ve been quiet long enough.
Throughout my ministry and life, I have had the privilege of sitting with people who have a variety of experiences surrounding pregnancy, miscarriages, infertility, parenthood, and abortion. I am so thankful and humbled that each person trusted me with some of the most intimate details of their life.
From my experience, people who chose abortion as part of an unplanned pregnancy, make that decision and act on that decision very early on. I’ve heard so many powerful stories of women who made this decision. Sadly, these women feel that they have to justify their decision. All that matters to me is that you are empowered over your own body.
More often than not, women who have an abortion in their second or third trimester, are often doing it out of a place of deep sorrow and great loss— that means there has been some kind of anomaly that was experienced and there is not a sustainable life inside the woman any more. There are times that a woman experiences a miscarriage and her body may need assistance to complete the process. One way that happens is through a D&C. A D&C is medically a method of abortion. Places that limit access to abortions, limit access to medical care in the case of miscarriages.
These anti-abortion laws that are being passed are simply immoral. We continually rip away access to medical care, dump crippling amounts of debt on students, blame the poor for their own poverty, demand longer work days and weeks, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Regardless of the reason a woman has for having an abortion, what matters is legal and safe abortions are good for society. I could possibly write a whole book on why safe, accessible abortions are good for society, but that is not the entire point I’m trying to make.
Does abortion go against your personal morals, beliefs or values? You do not have to chose to have an abortion, and I truly hope and pray you never have the need to seek one. I do ask you to think about how limiting access for others is problematic. What kind of problems you ask?
– It’s a class issue. People with more financial resources WILL be able to find a way to have an abortion that generally involves the ability to travel long distances. People with less financial resources will not have the same access to travel long distances.
– Long term studies show when you limit access to safe and legal abortions, you see an uptick in crime.
– Women will still seek ways to end an unwanted pregnancy. This often leads to acts of desperation that lead to major health issues.
– Issues around stigmatization: women would rather die than have an abortion. LITERALLY. There is so much stigma around abortion that a woman who has no life in utero would let their body go into shock and die instead of having a life saving procedure.
– One word: overpopulation.
Want to decrease abortions? There are proven ways to do that!
– Invest in comprehensive sex education. Educating people about sex, pregnancy, and how to prevent it doesn’t encourage them to go out have all the sex. No, it educates and empowers.
– Free and easy access to birth control and contraceptives.
– Hold men responsible to proper and consistent contraceptive use.
– Teach consent.
It’s a complex experience. Be gentle with yourself and others around the topic of abortion. Judging, shaming, hate, and condemnation are not okay. Sex is a gift from God, not something that is meant to be feared. Not something that is meant to create shame. Not something that is meant to be used for manipulation and control. It is something that is meant to be pleasurable and holy… again, another topic for a book I could write… educate yourself. Learn more about the complexity of safe, equal, access to abortion.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.

Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.

“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.
