Body of trans doctor María Elizabeth Montaño found dumped by a motorway in Mexico
Lily Wakefield June 20, 2020

Trans doctor María Elizabeth Montaño was found dead on Friday, June 19.

The body of doctor and trans woman María Elizabeth Montaño has been found by authorities in Mexico dumped by the side of a motorway.

According to Reuters, authorities said Montaño, 47, worked at the Mexican Social Security Institute but had been missing for almost 10 days when her body was found near the town of Tres Marias, around 50 kilometers outside Mexico City.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, wrote on Twitter: “We are so sorry that Doctor Elizabeth has been found dead.

“We are in contact with her family to whom we send our solidarity.

“We expect a prompt result of the investigations from prosecutors.”

— Claudia Sheinbaum (@Claudiashein) June 19, 2020

Montaño was a trans rights advocate in Mexico’s health sector, and even trained other doctors in trans healthcare.

Activist Siobhan McManus told Reuters: “It’s a huge loss because still in this country many doctors see trans identities as a disease, a disorder.

“Elizabeth was a transformational force within medical communities and was a very important voice.”

The death of the trans doctor has reignited fears for the safety of the trans community in Mexico.

Half of Mexico’s states now allow marriage equality and courts have also ruled in favour of cornerstones for trans rights, such as the legal right to change gender identity on official documents.

But despite these recent strides towards LGBT+ equality, violence against queer people, particularly trans women, is on the rise.

At least 117 LGBT+ people were brutally murdered in Mexico last year, in what activists called the deadliest year on record in half a decade.

The figure was up almost a third (27 percent) compared to 2018, and more than half of the LGBT+ victims were trans women, according to a report by Letra Esse.

The group warned, however, that the real figure might be even higher.

Alex Orue, It Gets Better Mexico, said Montaño’s death “is a powerful reminder … of the violent situation that LGBT+ communities live in, and particularly trans populations.”

He added: “It’s cruel on so many levels.”

On Friday, Morelos Attorney General’s Office (FGE) concluded the autopsy of María Elizabeth Montaño ’s body, who was 47 years old, and strengthened the hypothesis on suicide through drug ingestion.

The FGE informed it would perform pathology studies and sent tissue samples to specialized laboratories to define the ingested substances and the damage to the organs that caused the death.

“Within the current investigations, and according to testimonies of relatives, María Elizabeth had manifested her will to deprive herself of life and it was through an e-mail scheduled on time after her disappearance, that she left a posthumous message to her relatives,” said the FGE in a statement.

The agency said it is working with its Mexico City counterpart to deliver the remains of the doctor to her family while it provides scientific results to Mexico City authorities that will be included in the corresponding investigation file .

Last night’s haul from Mekong Market.

Lemme see:

Pork heart – 2lbs
Tomatoes – five
Opo – one
Daikon (Chinese) – one
Daikon (Japanese) – one
Celery – one bunch
Napa – one head
Yu choy – one bag
Bok choy – one bag
Strawberries – two one-pound cartons
Kimchi – one jar (half gallon)
Soy milk – half gallon
Dragon Fruit – two

All for less than $40.

I can usually eat in one week what fresh foods that I can fit in one box.

Anything more can spoil and become waste.

>

These few items are treat purchases:

kimchi ($11)
soy milk ($4)
Dragon Fruit ($5)
pork heart ($5)

That is more than one-half my bill.

I guess that I am allowed once in a while.

Back on budget for next week.

>

Daikon is a radish.

Opo is a squash that looks like a cucumber.

Napa is cabbage.

Yu choy is similar to bok choy – a leafy vegetable with a stalk.

Don’t think that I ever ate them before, ’bout time when I try.

That one box was quite heavy – even rolling it in the cart.

I shall clean the vegetables and simply add to the cooker.  Dunno anything specific.  I just go with whatever works.  Can’t wait to try the new foods.

I need to cook outside.  Too hot to cook inside.

*

I didn’t arrive home til 11.30pm last night.  Too late for a stop at el Super; another day.

I was tired.

I snacked on a few bites of kimchi, drank some soy milk and fell asleep.

But my sleep was restless.  I had been waking up about every hour with an overall ill feeling.

I had a vivid dream that woke me.  People were chasing us on the street as I was riding in a car driven by someone else.  Huh?  Right-side drive?  Suddenly, a vehicle that was chasing us tried to cut us off, but crashed instead.  My driver and I laughed – they got what was coming to them.

Maybe I was putting myself into one of those stupid Internet videos when some show-off creep tries to pull a stunt and wrecks his car.

*

I feel better this morning.

Snacked on kimchi.

Finished the soy milk.

Simple stuff of life.  Life is good.

‘Pure Evil’: Report On Trump Administration Draining Fund For FDNY’s 9/11 Responders Draws Outrage

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

KEY FACTS

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.

“TRUMP DOESN’T ONLY HATE VETERANS, HE HATES FIRST RESPONDER HEROES,” tweeted actress Debra Messing in reaction to the Daily News report.

Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.

“From the administration whose identity is built on claims of honoring first responders,” Julie Cohen, director of the RBG documentary, wrote on Twitter.

“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Army veteran and advocate Paul Rieckoff wrote on Twitter. “Trump did NOTHING to push for the extension of #Zadroga last year.”

“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“Here we have sick World Trade Center-exposed firefighters and EMS workers, at a time when the city is having difficult financial circumstances due to COVID-19, and we’re not getting the money we need to be able to treat these heroes,” FDNY Chief Medical Officer David Prezant told the Daily News.

CHIEF CRITIC

“Pure evil,” tweeted Dr. Dena Grayson, a medical expert who specializes in ebola and other viruses.
