This makes you proud.

You don’t get any better than this!

You would be a comedy routine if it weren’t for this being true.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:

– ‘While male homosexuality remained illegal in Weimar Germany under Paragraph 175 of the criminal code, German homosexual-rights activists became worldwide leaders in efforts to reform societal attitudes that condemned homosexuality. Many in Germany regarded the Weimar Republic’s toleration of homosexuals as a sign of Germany’s decadence. The Nazis posed as moral crusaders who wanted to stamp out the “vice” of homosexuality from Germany in order to help win the racial struggle. Once they took power in 1933, the Nazis intensified persecution of German male homosexuals. Persecution ranged from the dissolution of homosexual organizations to internment in concentration camps.

The Nazis persecuted homosexuals as part of their so-called moral crusade to racially and culturally purify Germany. Gay men were targeted for persecution because they were viewed to be carriers of a “contagion” that weakened society and did not contribute to the desired growth of the “Aryan” population” Between 1933 and 1945, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested for violating Nazi Germany’s law against homosexuality, and of these, approximately 50,000 were sentenced to prison. An estimated 5,000 to 15,000 men were sent to concentration camps on similar charges, where an unknown number of them perished.’

Hitler’s Homosexual NAZIs were so enthusiastic that they must have waltzed right into the concentration death camps and jumpt directly into the crematorium.

Republican Who Claims Holocaust Was Orchestrated by Gay Nazis Wins Enough Support for Massachusetts Governor Primary

The author of a book claiming that the Holocaust was orchestrated by gay men who ran the Nazi party will appear on a Massachusetts gubernatorial primary ballot later this year after garnering enough support at the Republican party’s state convention last week. Scott Lively will now face off with incumbent governor Charlie Baker in September’s primary.

Related: Republican Senate Candidate Praises Hitler and Sparks Condemnation from California GOP

Lively wrote a 1995 book, titled The Pink Swastika, in which he asserted that the Nazi party that took power in Germany in the 1930s was controlled by “militaristic” homosexuals who inspired the murder of about 6 million European Jews. The Holocaust also saw the persecution of a number of other groups, including homosexuals. Lively’s claims have been roundly debunked by historians.

But the controversy surrounding Lively does not end there. He is the founder of an anti-LGBT group, Abiding Truth Ministries, which is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is also staunchly anti-abortion. On his campaign website, Lively stated that “abortion is the intentional killing of a living human being and should be criminalized.”

He added that he “would work to ensure that it carried a serious penalty for anyone who deliberately and with premeditation kills an unborn child.”

Despite this, he received support from 626 of the more than 2,000 delegates at the Massachusetts Republican Party Convention—almost double the 15 percent required to get on the ballot.

“When you’ve got the nation’s most popular governor at the top of the ballot, certainly it’s strange that Scott Lively would be able to get from the Republican conventiongoers that kind of support, and that kind of a vote,” Massachusetts political consultant Anthony Cignoli told Mass Live. “Did these conventiongoers, these delegates, go there specifically for him; was this an effort that was orchestrated and to the credit of his campaign? Or is this indicative of what the base of the Republican party regulars are?”

Despite his surprise success, few expect Lively’s campaign to go much further. Baker, who has regularly been voted the country’s most popular governor, still garnered 70 percent of delegates’ support at the convention.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

KEY FACTS

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.

“TRUMP DOESN’T ONLY HATE VETERANS, HE HATES FIRST RESPONDER HEROES,” tweeted actress Debra Messing in reaction to the Daily News report.

Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.

“From the administration whose identity is built on claims of honoring first responders,” Julie Cohen, director of the RBG documentary, wrote on Twitter.

“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Army veteran and advocate Paul Rieckoff wrote on Twitter. “Trump did NOTHING to push for the extension of #Zadroga last year.”

“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.

CRUCIAL QUOTE

“Here we have sick World Trade Center-exposed firefighters and EMS workers, at a time when the city is having difficult financial circumstances due to COVID-19, and we’re not getting the money we need to be able to treat these heroes,” FDNY Chief Medical Officer David Prezant told the Daily News.

CHIEF CRITIC

“Pure evil,” tweeted Dr. Dena Grayson, a medical expert who specializes in ebola and other viruses.

Russia Explains Everything About Donald Trump
Wherever you look on the global stage, Trump is doing Vladimir Putin’s bidding.

I don’t want to talk down to someone as intelligent and experienced as YJ Fischer, but she does seem to miss the gorilla in the room. In her column for CNN, she rightfully sounds the alarm about President Trump’s expressed willingness to pull all of our troops out of South Korea, and she notes that this would be a huge boon to China and North Korea as well as a great danger for South Korea and Japan. She might have noted, however, that the Korean War started when Joseph Stalin gave his blessing. Originally, the idea was that tying American troops down in the Far East would give Russia a freer hand in Europe and a stronger alliance with China. That logic has been inoperative for decades, and what Russia, China, and North Korea would like to see now is an American retreat back home across the Pacific Ocean.

As Fischer notes, Trump began questioning America’s presence in the Far East during the campaign. And just prior to the Winter Olympics, there was a flare-up between the president and his chief of staff John Kelly over Trump’s insistence that we unilaterally withdraw from the Korean peninsula without any cause, concessions or consultations with our allies. According to the New York Times, Trump has now ordered the Pentagon to draw up plans for withdrawing our troops, an idea so unsupported in the administration that National Security Adviser John Bolton called it “utter nonsense” and said “the President has not asked the Pentagon to provide options for reducing American forces stationed in South Korea.”

In many ways, this bizarre behavior has been mirrored in Syria. During the campaign, Trump explicitly said that he felt we should leave Syria to the Russians and that Putin’s only concern there was fighting ISIS which seemed like a fine idea. As in South Korea, Trump recently caused an internal uproar when he suddenly called for the immediate withdrawal of all American troops from Syria. Much of this history was immediately forgotten after the subsequent chemical attack in the Damascus suburbs, but I wrote about it at the time: As He Promised, Trump Will Gift Syria to Putin.

Here’s a taste of how things went down in the Situation Room:

Trump’s desire for a rapid withdrawal [from Syria] faced unanimous opposition from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Pentagon, the State Department and the intelligence community, all of which argued that keeping the 2,000 U.S. soldiers currently in Syria is key to ensuring the Islamic State does not reconstitute itself.

But as they huddled in the Situation Room, the president was vocal and vehement in insisting that the withdrawal be completed quickly if not immediately, according to five administration officials briefed on Tuesday’s White House meeting of Trump and his top aides…

…Documents presented to the president included several pages of possibilities for staying in, but only a brief description of an option for full withdrawal that emphasized significant risks and downsides, including the likelihood that Iran and Russia would take advantage of a U.S. vacuum.

Ultimately, Trump chose that option anyway.

This decision has been delayed in the aftermath of the chemical attacks, but it shows that Trump is as interested in doing Russia’s bidding in Syria as he is in Korea. It’s consistent with Trump’s approval of and promise to recognize the annexation of Crimea, his attacks on an “obsolete” NATO, his attacks on the European Union, his celebration of the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom that the Russians also supported, his refusal to accept the consensus of his intelligence community that Russia was behind the hacks and worked to help him in his election, and his reluctance to issue sanctions against Russia and his fury about their severity.

It’s consistent with his decision recently to countermand Russian sanctions that had been announced by UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

President Trump was watching television on Sunday when he saw Nikki R. Haley, his ambassador to the United Nations, announce that he would impose fresh sanctions on Russia. The president grew angry, according to an official informed about the moment. As far as he was concerned, he had decided no such thing.

There’s really nothing subtle about these moves. Trump isn’t about subtlety. The day after he fired James Comey, he invited Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak into the Oval Office and told them that he had been under great pressure in the Russia investigation but that it was now resolved: “I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job.” Then he showed them sensitive intelligence about Syria that had been provided by the Israelis. It was the exact kind of thing the Israelis had been worried about:

In January [2017], it was reported that Israeli intelligence officials were concerned that the exposure of classified information to their American counterparts in the Trump administration could lead to it being leaked to Russia and onward to Iran. The intelligence concerns, which had been discussed in closed forums, were based on suspicions of ties between Trump, or his associates, and the government of Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Given the cumulative evidence, do we not have the right to suspect that Trump’s motives in wanting to pull our troops out of Korea don’t have anything to do with saving money or enhancing our national security? Does it not seem more likely that Trump is engaged everywhere in actions that will benefit Russia?

Pulling out of the Paris Climate deal helps oil-producing states like Russia while decimating America’s moral standing in the world. Breaking America’s commitment to the Iranian Nuclear Deal creates the worst rift in the Trans-Atlantic alliance in its entire history and leaves Europe isolated and more Russia-dependent than ever. If Vladimir Putin were in the White House instead of Trump, he would make these same decisions but he wouldn’t get away with such obvious sabotage.

And, yet, we have David Brooks telling us that Trump is perhaps governing like a true gangster.

If not for the Trump and [Michael] Cohen peer circle, white-collar prisons would be sitting empty. And this all happened before Trump and Cohen elevated their moral associations even higher by entangling with Russian oligarchs.

And yet I can’t help but wonder if that kind of background has provided a decent education for dealing with the sort of hopped-up mobsters running parts of the world today. There is growing reason to believe that Donald Trump understands the thug mind a whole lot better than the people who attended our prestigious Foreign Service academies.

The first piece of evidence is North Korea. When Trump was trading crude, back-alley swipes with “Little Rocket Man,” Kim Jong-un, about whose nuclear button was bigger, it sounded as if we were heading for a nuclear holocaust led by a pair of overgrown prepubescents.

In fact, Trump’s bellicosity seems to have worked. It’s impossible to know how things will pan out, but the situation with North Korea today is a lot better than it was six months ago. Hostages are being released, talks are being held. There seems to be a chance for progress unfelt in years.

Maybe Trump intuited something about the sorts of people who run the North Korean regime that others missed.

It’s hard to describe the obliviousness of this analysis. Trump had to be shouted down by his chief of staff to prevent him from ordering the removal of our troops from the Korean peninsula prior to us getting any concessions or hostages back from North Korea. Is it any surprise that the North Koreans have responded to this with conciliatory actions? Their fondest hope is within reach and was nearly reached without them having to lift a finger. Why make trouble for the president when he’s trying to surrender?

To be clear, there are arguments that can be made against America having a large military presence around the globe, including in Korea and Syria, but Trump no more articulates these arguments than he understands them. He doesn’t have some informed and accurate rationale for what he says about Brexit or the European Union or NATO or Crimea. What he says is what Vladimir Putin would want him to say. That’s the only thing that is consistent in all of this.

The US elite foreign policy establishment doesn’t have a good record in recent years and just because they think Trump is out of his mind doesn’t mean that they’re the smartest or wisest people to be running our country. I’ve spent most of the last twenty years blasting away at how we have conducted the war on terror, and my critiques of America’s economic imperialism go back much further than that. Trump is sometimes right in the same way that a broken clock is right. For that matter, some of Russia’s critiques and complaints about U.S. policy have some merit to them.

But as dissatisfied as I am with the people who have been running our country, I am completely appalled to see our country taken over by a kleptocratic assassin like Vladimir Putin. His values and his foreign policies can never be our values and our foreign policies.

And, yet, this is exactly what we’re seeing happen right in front of our eyes.

The problem is compounded by the fact that this is so shocking and hard to accept that even knowledgable critics have a hard time facing up to it. So we get critiques like the ones above from YJ Fischer and David Brooks. They have wildly divergent takes on what we’re seeing in North Korea but where they agree is in missing the real story.

Trump isn’t some masterful thug negotiator nor is he ready to give away the store in return of anything of actual value. He’s just anxious to give away the store.

History
The Nazi Attack on Queer People Began 87 Years Ago Today

This month we mark a dark time in queer history: it’s been 87 years since the Nazis destroyed the Institute of Sex Research in Berlin, destroying priceless scholarship into sexual orientation and identity and laying the groundwork for the persecution that would continue (in Europe and America) for decades to come.

The beginnings of the Institute of Sex Research

Founded in 1919 by Magnus Hirschfeld and Arthur Kronfeld, the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft was an early pioneer in early 20th century efforts to obtain equality for LGBTQ people. Hirschfeld quickly amassed a large library of research and surveys that detailed the sexual practices of thousands of people. Patients also flocked to the institute’s medical services, which included everything from physical treatments to marriage counseling.

Magnus Hirschfeld

Hirschfeld strove to ensure that the institute’s services were available to all, providing low and no-cost treatments for people with financial constraints. They were also at the forefront of advances that, nearly a century later, America still lags behind other countries: treating sexually transmitted diseases, providing economic freedom for women, expanding access to birth control and educating people on sex and pleasure.

For a time, the work of Hirschfeld and his colleagues was unrivaled, and the institute was globally recognized as the leader in sexual research. That set an important tone between the two world wars since the researchers were unequivocally outspoken when it came to what we would today call queer liberation — although they certainly wouldn’t have used that term at the time.

RELATED | Here’s What Life Under the Nazis Was Like for Queer People

Leadership of the Institute made significant contributions throughout the 1920s and early 1930s. They helped to end police entrapment of people we would today call transgender — “transsexualism” was the favored term at the time. The Institute also offered medical services for people wishing to transition, something virtually unheard of at that time.
The Nazis ruin everything as they always do

A Nazi book burning at the Opera Square four days after the destruction of the Institute of Sex Research

But it was not to last for long. In the early 1930s, the rise of the Nazis spelled doom for scholarship and liberation. Nazis attacked queer establishments, rounding up anyone deemed to be insufficiently heterosexual. An administrator of the Institute, Kurt Hiller, was abducted and trapped in a concentration camp, eventually fleeing to Prague and London.

The end came in May of 1933. The German Student Union — a collective of Nazi youth — attacked the building on May 6th, scattering researchers and patients. The Nazis stole records that allowed them to later round up and execute suspected homosexuals, and then on May 10th, they conducted a public book-burning.

The bonfire destroyed about 20,000 books and 5,000 images, a priceless trove of knowledge gone within minutes. At the same time, Nazis issued an edict against other books that offended their sensibilities, destroying the work of Jewish, pacifist, and progressive writers that included Albert Einstein and Karl Marx. Today, the site of the fire is commemorated with a glass pane set in a cobblestone square, showing empty bookshelves. A nearby plaque notes that the burning of books is a prelude to the burning of people.

Hirschfeld escaped the violence but died two years later in Paris before he was able to re-establish the Institute. The price of the May violence was incalculable: not only were volumes of research lost but the actions of the Nazis further entrenched homophobia that would be widespread for decades to come. Even after the Allied victory, Germany’s new government continued to persecute and oppress queer citizens.

One-Third of Americans Don’t Believe 6 Million Jews Were Murdered During the Holocaust

Updated | One-third of Americans think “substantially less” than 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, according to a new survey that highlights a worrying lack of basic knowledge about the World War II-era genocide.

The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, or Claims Conference, released the findings of its survey to coincide with Holocaust Remembrance Day. They show a notable lack of understanding among Americans, especially millennials, the group said.

The Claims Conference said there are “critical gaps both in awareness of basic facts as well as detailed knowledge of the Holocaust” in American society, stressing that U.S. schools must provide more comprehensive education on the crimes.

The survey shows that 70 percent of Americans believe people care less about the Holocaust than they used to. A majority, 58 percent, said they believe something like the Holocaust could happen again.

.

31 percent of the Americans surveyed, and 41 percent of millennials within that group, do not believe that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust and think the real death toll is at least 2 million lower.

Adolf Hitler’s fascist Nazi regime killed approximately 6 million Jews before and during World War II. The Nazis also murdered millions of Eastern European civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, disabled people, homosexuals and political prisoners. Estimates of the total death toll reach as high at 15 million to 20 million people.

Almost half (45 percent) of Americans were unable to name a single concentration camp, and the number was even worse for millennials (49 percent). Two-thirds (66 percent) of millennials were unable to explain what Auschwitz was. The death camp is one of the most infamous that existed in Nazi-ruled Europe, and its name has become synonymous with the genocide.

15 percent thought people should be allowed to display Nazi slogans or symbols today, while 11 percent said it is acceptable to hold neo-Nazi views.

These figures are especially concerning given the reported rise in hate group numbers, activity and confidence in recent years. A February report from the Southern Poverty Law Center claimed that the number of hate groups in the U.S. has increased by 20 percent over the past three years. The number of neo-Nazi groups increased from 99 in 2016 to 121 in 2017, the center said.

According to the Claims Conference survey, around two-thirds (68 percent) of Americans believe there is anti-Semitism in the U.S. today. “A combined majority (51%) of Americans believe there are a great deal (17%) or many (34%) Neo-Nazis in the United States today,” the survey reported.

Despite the worrying figures, 93 percent of those asked think the Holocaust should be taught in schools, while 96 percent believe that the genocide happened.

Claims Conference President Julius Berman said it is “vital to open a dialogue on the state of Holocaust awareness so that the lessons learned inform the next generation. We are alarmed that today’s generation lacks some of the basic knowledge about these atrocities.”

Greg Schneider, executive vice president of the Claims Conference, said, “There remain troubling gaps in Holocaust awareness while survivors are still with us; imagine when there are no longer survivors here to tell their stories. We must be committed to ensuring the horrors of the Holocaust and the memory of those who suffered so greatly are remembered, told and taught by future generations.”

The Claims Conference said its results are based on a representative sample of 1,350 American adults interviewed by phone and online. Respondents were selected randomly and reflected the demographics of the American adult population, it said.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), told Newsweek that the ADL’s research shows Americans “overwhelmingly—almost universally,” know the Holocaust happened. That said, the ADL has long had concerns about the level of knowledge of the Holocaust, “particularly among young people.”

“The farther we move away from the terrible events of the Nazi era, the more creative we have to be in connecting young people, for whom it is all ancient history, to the horrors that took place and how it is relevant to today’s society,” Greenblatt explained.

<p>Public burning of “un-German” books in the Opernplatz (Opera Square). Berlin, Germany, May 10, 1933.</p>

BOOK BURNING

Beginning on May 10, 1933, Nazi-dominated student groups carried out public burnings of books they claimed were “un-German.” The book burnings took place in 34 university towns and cities. Works of prominent Jewish, liberal, and leftist writers ended up in the bonfires. The book burnings stood as a powerful symbol of Nazi intolerance and censorship.

KEY FACTS

1
The Nazi university student association created blacklists of works by literary and political figures such as Bertolt Brecht, Erich Maria Remarque, and Ernest Hemingway that were to be thrown into the flames.

2
In the aftermath of the book burnings, the Nazi regime raided book stores, libraries, and publishers’ warehouses to confiscate materials it deemed dangerous or “un-German.”

3
The Nazi book burnings provoked international criticism from intellectuals and the press. They saw it as a barbaric act that was out of keeping with a modern, civilized society.

Introduction

Book burning has a long and dark history.

Book burning refers to the ritual destruction by fire of books or other written materials. Usually carried out in a public context, the burning of books represents an element of censorship and usually proceeds from a cultural, religious, or political opposition to the materials in question.

The burning of books under the Nazi regime on May 10, 1933, is perhaps the most famous book burning in history.

Book burning in Berlin. Germany, May 10, 1933.

A Nineteenth-Century Precedent

The May 1933 book burning in Nazi Germany had a precedent in nineteenth century Germany. In 1817, German student associations (Burschenschaften) chose the 300th anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses to hold a festival at the Wartburg, a castle in Thuringia where Luther had sought sanctuary after his excommunication. The students, demonstrating for a unified country—Germany was then a patchwork of states—burned anti-national and reactionary texts and literature which the students viewed as “Un-German.”

“Synchronizing” Culture with Nazi Ideology

In 1933, Nazi German authorities aimed to synchronize professional and cultural organizations with Nazi ideology and policy (Gleichschaltung). Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, began an effort to bring German arts and culture in line with Nazi goals. The government purged cultural organizations of Jewish and other officials alleged to be politically suspect or who performed or created art works which Nazi ideologues labeled “degenerate.”

In an effort to synchronize the literary community, Goebbels had a strong ally in the National Socialist German Students’ Association (Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund, or NSDStB). German university students were among the vanguard of the early Nazi movement, and in the late 1920s, many filled the ranks of various Nazi formations. The ultra-nationalism and antisemitism of middle-class, secular student organizations had been intense and vocal for decades. After World War I, many students opposed the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and found in National Socialism a suitable vehicle for their political discontent and hostility.

On April 6, 1933, the Nazi German Student Association’s Main Office for Press and Propaganda proclaimed a nationwide “Action against the Un-German Spirit,” to climax in a literary purge or “cleansing” (Säuberung) by fire. Local chapters were to supply the press with releases and commissioned articles, offer blacklists of “un-German” authors, sponsor well-known Nazi figures to speak at public gatherings, and negotiate for radio broadcast time.

On April 8 the students’ association also drafted its twelve “theses”—a deliberate evocation of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses: declarations which described the fundamentals of a “pure” national language and culture. Placards publicized the theses, which attacked “Jewish intellectualism,” asserted the need to “purify” the German language and literature, and demanded that universities be centers of German nationalism. The students described the “action” as a response to a worldwide Jewish “smear campaign” against Germany and an affirmation of traditional German values.

US Holocaust Memorial Museum

In a symbolic act of ominous significance, on May 10, 1933, university students burned upwards of 25,000 volumes of “un-German” books, presaging an era of state censorship and control of culture. On the evening of May 10, in most university towns, right-wing students marched in torchlight parades “against the un-German spirit.” The scripted rituals called for high Nazi officials, professors, university rectors, and university student leaders to address the participants and spectators.

At the meeting places, students threw the pillaged and “unwanted” books onto bonfires with great ceremony, band-playing, and so-called “fire oaths.” In Berlin, some 40,000 persons gathered in the Opernplatz to hear Joseph Goebbels deliver a fiery address: “No to decadence and moral corruption!” Goebbels enjoined the crowd. “Yes to decency and morality in family and state! I consign to the flames the writings of Heinrich Mann, Ernst Gläser, Erich Kästner.”

Which Authors and Works were Targeted?

Among the authors whose books student leaders burned that night were well-known socialists such as Bertolt Brecht and August Bebel; the founder of the concept of communism, Karl Marx; critical “bourgeois” writers like the Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler; and “corrupting foreign influences,” among them American author Ernest Hemingway.

The fires also consumed several writings of the 1929 Nobel Prize-winning German author Thomas Mann, whose support of the Weimar Republic and critique of fascism raised Nazi ire. Also burned were works of international best-selling author Erich Maria Remarque. Nazi ideologues vilified Remarque’s unflinching description of war, All Quiet on the Western Front, as “a literary betrayal of the soldiers of the World War.” Works by early German literary critics of the Nazi regime were also burned, such as those of Erich Kästner, Heinrich Mann, and Ernst Gläser.

Other writers included on the blacklists were American authors Jack London, Theodore Dreiser, and Helen Keller, whose belief in social justice encouraged her to champion the disabled, pacifism, improved conditions for industrial workers, and women’s voting rights.

Jewish authors numbered among the writers whose works were burned, among them some of the most famous contemporary writers of the day, such as Franz Werfel, Max Brod, and Stefan Zweig.

Also among those works burned were the writings of beloved nineteenth-century German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, who wrote in his 1820–1821 play Almansor the famous admonition, “Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen”: “Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.”

Not all book burnings took place on May 10, as the German Student Association had planned. Some were postponed a few days because of rain. Others, based on local chapter preference, took place on June 21, the summer solstice, a traditional date for bonfire celebrations in Germany.

Nonetheless, in 34 university towns across Germany the May 10th “Action against the Un-German Spirit” was a success, receiving widespread newspaper coverage. In some cities, notably Berlin, radio broadcasts brought the speeches, songs, and ceremonial chants “live” to countless German listeners. The promotion of “Aryan” culture and the suppression of other forms of artistic production was yet another Nazi effort to “purify” Germany.

Why do Totalitarian Regimes Often Target Culture?

In this short film, a Holocaust survivor, an Iranian author, an American literary critic, and two Museum historians discuss the Nazi book burnings and why totalitarian regimes often target culture, particularly literature.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
If Jews were the principal target during the Holocaust, why were books written by non-Jewish authors burned?
How did the German public react? What was reaction like outside of Germany?
Why do oppressive regimes promote or support censorship and book burning? Why might this be a warning sign for mass atrocity?
How can knowledge of the events in Germany and Europe before the Nazis came to power help citizens today respond to threats of genocide and mass atrocity in the world?

Newsweek:  a worrying lack of basic knowledge about the World War II-era genocide

‘Those who burn books eventually burn people.’

And so it began – on this date – 10 May 1933:

 – when Hitler’s first target were the Trans and the LGBT people,

 – when Hitler ordered the burning of Dr. Hirschfeld’s Research Library,

 – when Hitler began the burning of people.
