On the very day of Chauvin’s conviction on three counts of murder, there was a White cop who murdered a Black man within a couple miles of that court house. No charges filed against the White cop.

I want to explain what we’re talking about when we say that transgender people need anti-discrimination protections in health care.
Because I think some of you really don’t understand what this means, or might perceive our reaction as dramatic. But it’s not.

I remember when I lived in Michigan and a trans woman that I knew had to call 911, because a serious wound she had (from an unrelated medical condition) started hemorrhaging overnight.
One of the EMTs went upstairs to her room, and when that EMT realized she was transgender, was visibly disgusted and left the room. Her mom overheard the EMT mocking her as he spoke to the other EMT, referring to her as an “it.”
But the worst part of it was that, when they decided that she needed to go to the hospital, they made her walk down the stairs herself, without helping her. She was hemorrhaging blood from a leg wound. They stood impatiently and just watched her struggle.
That’s not even the worst story that I know of. A transgender woman in DC named Tyra Hunter was seriously injured in a car accident, and ambulance workers, upon realizing she was trans, outright refused to treat her. They mocked her. She later DIED from those wounds.
A trans man named Robert Eads died of ovarian cancer after TWENTY SEPARATE DOCTORS refused to treat him. Lambda Legal reported that one of the doctors said the cancer diagnosis should make Eads “deal with the fact that he is not a real man.”
I have known trans people who have been mocked while they were gravely ill in a hospital bed. I have known trans people who were outright turned away by doctors, or have had pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions that were desperately needed.
I want you to understand that when we say that these protections are a matter of life or death, we mean that LITERALLY. Transgender people have already died in utterly and preventable tragic ways because medical “professionals” turned their backs on us when we needed help.
When I was psychiatrically hospitalized, I had transphobic providers who REFUSED to give me access to my hormones, claiming that perhaps it wasn’t my obsessive-compulsive disorder that was causing my mental anguish, but testosterone.
This is not about politics. This is about fundamental human rights. I want you to imagine getting into a serious car accident, and as you are literally dying before someone’s eyes, they are MOCKING you when you thought they had come to help you.
I want you to imagine getting a cancer diagnosis, and going to doctor after doctor, TWENTY TIMES, to no avail. Imagine one callously remarking that maybe the cancer would teach you a lesson. Imagine the time is ticking, and no matter how much you plead, no one will help.
I want you to imagine the humiliation of hemorrhaging blood, and being made to crawl down a staircase, and two ambulance workers that you called for help refer to you as “it” and look at you with disgust.
I don’t care about your politics right now. Fuck politics. This is whether or not you would cosign that level of cruelty. Whether the lives lost, the families mourning, the suffering endured, truly mean nothing to you.
And these are just the stories we know of. There are more transgender people who simply didn’t call 911, didn’t go to the doctor, didn’t ask for help because they truly believed that no one would help them. Because it was too traumatic to take that risk again.
And honestly, if the politics you abide by lead you to believe that this is in any way acceptable, your political affiliations are morally bankrupt and so are you. If your political allegiances lead you to that depth of cruelty, I have questions for you. Real fucking questions.
Do you believe that’s how another human being should be treated? Do you believe, in a civil society, medical professionals should behave? That someone should be left to die? Laughed at as they are helpless and afraid for their life? Would you wish that on someone?
And if you believe the stripping away of these protections is anything than utterly barbaric, here’s the reality: Your contempt for transgender people – so much so that you would co-sign their deaths – shows exactly which one of us is truly disgusting.

Iowa Supreme Court rules that Medicaid can cover sex reassignment surgery

The Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Friday in favor of two transgender women, effectively striking down the state’s ban on Medicaid coverage for sex reassignment surgery.
The case involved EerieAnna Good and Carol Anne Beal, two women whose medical providers determined that sex reassignment surgery was necessary to treat their gender dysphoria. Yet when Good and Beal — who have identified as female since childhood — sought to have surgery under the state’s Medicaid program, they were denied. They appealed to the state agency, which oversees the program, but were rejected again.
“So many people still don’t understand that this is not something we need for trivial or cosmetic reasons,” Good said. “It’s medical care a doctor is recommending for someone who has a medical need for it.”
Good and Beal sued the agency in 2017. In June, Judge Arthur Gamble of the Judicial District 5 Court ruled that a 1995 Iowa Department of Human Services policy denying Medicaid coverage for sex reassignment surgery violates the state’s 2007 Civil Rights Act, which added gender identity to the state’s list of protected classes.
In its appeal, the agency argued that its policy wasn’t discriminatory because neither transgender nor non-transgender individuals were able to use Medicaid benefits for gender-reassignment surgery, which it said is performed “primarily for psychological purposes.” It also argued that the policy’s explicit exclusion of gender-reassignment surgeries was an example of “cosmetic, reconstructive, and plastic surgeries” that are excluded from coverage.
Yet the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision on Friday, arguing that Good and Beal were denied sex reassignment surgery because they were “related to gender identity disorders.” It also asserted that Medicaid does authorize payment for some cosmetic surgeries that serve psychological purposes, such as to help disfiguring scarring and congenital anomalies.
The Iowa Department of Human Services did not respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
“We are extremely happy with this ruling,” Rita Bettis Austen, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, said at a press conference on Friday afternoon. “This is the first decision by the Iowa Supreme Court that affirms the rights of transgender Iowans to non-discrimination under the Iowa Civil Rights Act.”
Medical experts from the American Medical Association agree that gender dysphoria, which occurs when a person’s assigned sex and gender at birth do not match their gender identity, is a serious medical condition that can be life-threatening if left untreated.
“I’ve lost transgender friends to suicide,” Good said. “I hope this decision helps change that.”
After today’s decision, 11 states and the District of Columbia currently cover transition-related surgical care through their public health insurance programs, according to the ACLU.
“Through our work with transgender Iowans, we have seen firsthand how powerful, life-changing, and absolutely essential gender-affirming surgery can be for transgender people grappling with gender dysphoria,” Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, the executive director of One Iowa, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, said. “This decision will, quite literally, save lives.”

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.

“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.
