‘Memorial Day (2023)’

Dear Reader:
I was browsing through my collection of memes and screen print images. I was looking for something for this Memorial Day weekend.
I need to write something. Maybe not too much. Allow the attachments speak for themselves, tell their message.
My father was drafted at age 18, sent to Boot Camp, then sent to serve at the Pacific Theater of World War II. The military assigned him to duty throughout the East all the way west to the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.
The military assigned my father to the Occupation Forces at Japan. The military awarded him a Japanese ceremonial sword; those were special awards to a limited number of GIs.
My father’s older brother served with the Code Talkers.
Both my father and his older brother opened a family tavern after the military discharged them. Something akin to Kelsey’s / ‘Archie’s Place’ on ‘All in the Family’.
The USA military came calling for my father when ‘conflict’ developed at the Korean Peninsula. They drafted him a second time. He served under extreme hardship; his DD-214 documents that the military awarded the Bronze Star to him.
My father would later serve as Commander for his local Veterans group during the 1980s.
My father bought an SLR camera and an 8mm home movie camera while on Occupation; he took pictures and movies during his Occupation service and then of Korea. During my childhood (the 1960s), my father allowed me to view those slides and 8mm home movies of his military experiences. My father rarely talked about the details of his military service.
My father returned home from military service, but the family tavern business failed. My father worked as a city cop while attending college through the GI Bill. He later worked as a drafting engineer for an aerospace corporation; he was on various design teams, one was creating what would become the Space Shuttle.
My father left the aerospace job to teach. His first assignment was a high school History teacher, then middle school Mathematics, and high school Mathematics. He also took later assignments as an elementary school Principal (Greece, New Mexico, and Arizona).
Jimmy was my neighbour and friend during my childhood. Actually, Jimmy is his nickname, he worked on his hot rod. We – Jimmy, myself, and other neighbours – played basketball at his driveway. The USA military drafted him at age 18, sent him to Boot Camp, then sent him directly to Viet Nam to die as cannon fodder at age 18. I have an etching of his name from the Viet Nam War Memorial Wall.
Dunno that I could have served in the military. I was in Transition at age 18. The military was not admitting Trans people in 1974. BBesides, I registered for the Draft as a Conscientious Objector. I did work as Civilian at a military base (1977 – 1978).
I sincerely doubt that my father fought in two wars to support the Hate agenda of Republi-cons, Christian Con-servatives, and Christian Nationalists. Nor Jimmy. Did you or your family or friends fight for the USA to become a nation of Hate! You are out there, either openly or else you enlisted falsely; you violated your solemn Oath of Office to gain expertise in military operations to eventually join anti-American terrorist groups to help overthrow our Constitution.

They call themselves Christian Taliban and Christian Nationalists. They proclaim ‘In God We Trust’, the motto established to differentiate the USA from those ‘godless Commies’. They assert that they are exclusively White European. Christian Nationalists render Black and Hispanic Christians to subordinate class status, which puzzles me why multitudes of Black, Hispanic, and other minorities flock to Christian Nationalist churches where their place is 2nd Class citizen. Political operatives who are convicted felons, convicted for Perjury and Bribery, are proclaiming honesty and the adherence to the Bible and the 10 Commandments.

In March 2022, the Idaho House of Representatives, like legislatures in 13 other states, voted to criminalize providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth. When asked about the bill’s threat to the lives of trans youth, Republican State Rep. Julianne Young replied, “I see this conversation as an extension of the pro-life argument.… We’re not talking about the life of the child, but we are talking about the potential to give life to another generation.”
On the one hand, we want to emphasize that Young’s assertion, suggesting that trans people never have or raise children, is false. Not only do trans people have and raise children, they often do so biologically, using their own gametes. On the other hand, it is important not to reproduce the implicit logic of Young’s statement, that adoption, fostering, extended family and kinship networks are somehow less important than biological reproduction. By reducing the definition of family and care to biological reproduction, Young is participating in the increasingly common “great replacement” discourse, a rhetorical framework grounded in the belief that society is structured first and foremost as a set of competing groups jostling for biological superiority.
So, whose group matters to Young? Using the basic demographics of her state, its clear that she is concerned with white trans youth. Looking beyond demographics, we have to think about who “counts” as a child in the United States. As scholars like Jules Gill-Peterson and others suggest, whiteness and childhood are co-constructed. Children of color are rarely described the way we describe white children, as something to be protected, nurtured and supported. Instead, they undergo “adultification,” being treated legally and socially as adults. White children, within this framework, need to be protected from the “social contagion” of transness. In comparison, children of color are already contaminated because of the historical connections between race and sexual and gender transgression.
Her comments not only point to common ground between anti-trans and anti-abortion movements, but are reminiscent of neo-Nazi David Lane’s infamous 14-word white nationalist slogan: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” The similarities point to the profound interconnectedness of transantagonism, sexism and racism. And the parallel proliferation of anti-trans, anti-abortion and anti-critical race theory bills isn’t a coincidence, either: They, too, are ultimately rooted in racism and white supremacy.
The bills flow from a fundamental belief that whiteness — both the category and those who occupy it — is under threat. The validity of this belief is less important than its influence; studies demonstrate that white Americans tend to see racism as a zero-sum game they are now losing. White people, as a category, tend to think of themselves as victims in a “winner-take-all” battle between supposedly “natural” racial groups, in which survival (and reproduction) of the fittest determines the dominant group. From this perspective, any advance made by non-white racial groups is seen as a direct attack on white supremacy and the ongoing ability of white people to reproduce — not just children, but the power and privilege of whiteness itself.
This social Darwinism produces two other rationales for violence: fear of demographic shifts which place white people in the numerical minority (“great replacement” theory), and fears about declining white reproduction (“white genocide” theory). These anxieties are deeply rooted in the collective American psyche and enshrined in its legal traditions.
White fears over Chinese immigration, particularly after the completion of the transcontinental railroad, led to the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, restricting all Chinese immigration to the U.S. and developing a legal point of reference for anti-Chinese pogroms and town burnings across the West Coast. The 1924 Johnson-Reed Act continued this tradition by completely closing off immigration from Asia and limiting all other immigration to 2 percent of each nationality as measured in the 1890 census.

Nebraska lawmaker says Republicans ‘hate’ her trans son more than they love their own kids

Nebraska Democrat Megan Hunt, one of two politicians who have filibustered anti-trans Republican bills in the state for three months, has issued a powerful message to her rivals.
Hunt, a mother to a trans son, was responding to senator Lou Ann Linehan in the Nebraska state House, who had complained that the filibuster on Legislative Bill 574 (LB574) meant she had missed her grandson’s preschool graduation.
A ‘filibuster’ is when politicians talk for as long as possible in a bid to stop legislation from passing.
“I hate that for you. I’m so sorry, seriously, I would hate to have that happen to me,” Hunt responded, before saying she was “happy” her efforts had rivals listening.
“I am not asking you to sit here through late nights to vote on these bills that we’re dragging out. I’m asking you to love your family more than you hate mine.
“If you want to see your grandson graduate from preschool, you should do that.”
She told the House she was blocking the passing of the bill because of the effect it would have on her family.
“Instead, you are here to drag out this session because you won’t come off this bill that hurts my son. You hate him, more than you love your own family and that’s why you’re here,” Hunt said.
“We don’t need you here. We need you to vote ‘no’ or present not voting on 574.
“There’s nothing else in this body that’s affecting your family that way.”

Hunt, along with fellow Nebraska Democrat Machaela Cavanaugh began to filibuster LB574 on 23 February. If the bill isn’t passed by 9 June, when the current legislative session ends, it will fail.
LB574 would end gender-affirming healthcare for under-18s in the state, and when the filibuster began, Cavanaugh promised she would “burn the session to the ground” in order to stop it being passed.
In a blow to Hunt, Cavanaugh and their supporters, Republicans held a successful vote to combine its trans healthcare ban with a bill banning abortion after 12 weeks in the state earlier this week.
“You are willing to drive this state into the ground. You look ridiculous,” Cavanaugh said in response, Associated Press reported.
“Women will die, children are dying, and you are responsible.”
She echoed Montana lawmaker Zooey Zephyr in claiming Republicans have “buckets and buckets of blood on your hands.”
When Zeyphr made her “blood on your hands” speech on 18 April 2023, she was censured by Republicans and expelled from the Montana state House.

Ron DeSantis spent Wednesday (17 May) indulging in what seems to be one of his favourite pastimes – enacting new laws that will make life much more difficult for LGBTQ+ people.
Florida’s hard-line Republican governor approved five new laws targeting the queer community, including a ban on gender-affirming care, restrictions on trans people using toilets, and drag show bans.
These newly implemented restrictions come amid an already-hostile environment for queer people in the state thanks to DeSantis’ war against what he sees as “woke ideology”.
He signed House Bill 1438, restricting drag shows, House Bill 1069, which expands the state’s Don’t Say Gay law, Senate Bill 254, banning gender-affirming care, House Bill 1521, to restrict the rights of trans people to use public toilets, and House Bill 225, which restricts trans people’s access to youth sports programmes.
Two days earlier, the governor – and possible presidential candidate – signed Senate Bill 266 into law, restricting equity initiatives from the Florida education system, which pulled funding from diversity, equality and inclusion programmes at public universities in the state.
He said that the new legislation would make Florida a “refuge of sanity”, seemingly referring to laws in some other US states, which have declared themselves safe havens for LGBTQ+ people fleeing places such as Florida.
“We need to let our kids just be kids,” he told reporters, after signing the bills. “What we’ve said in Florida is we are going to remain a refuge of sanity and a citadel of normalcy.”
Human rights groups condemn Ron DeSantis’ attacks
DeSantis’ continued attacks on LGBTQ+ people have been shamed by human rights groups and progressive politicians.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC) president, Kelley Robinson, said “extremist” Republicans passing these bills in Florida are some of the “most anti-LGBTQ+ politicians in America.”
She added: “DeSantis has made [it] clear that demonising LGBTQ+ people will be [at] the centre of his legislative agenda and presidential run.
“From doctors’ offices to classrooms, they show no shame in assaulting the freedoms of those different from them. They are trying to whitewash history and use the power of the government to punish anyone they disagree with.”
In association with several legal teams, the HRC will look to block SB 254 because of the potential damage restricting gender-affirming care could do to trans children.
Meanwhile, Lambda Legal’s deputy legal director for policy, Kristine Kippins, noted the audacity of signing the bills on International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
“Governor Ron DeSantis is demonstrating an intentional, callous disregard for LGBTQ+ Floridians and, in particular, trans youth, by facilitating homophobia and transphobia and exposing his most vulnerable population to discrimination,” she said.
DeSantis’ tirade against LGBTQ+ people isn’t set to stop yet, with a sixth bill, that would discourage cities from passing non-discrimination ordinances, by raising restrictions, seemingly set to be signed into law in the near future.
The combined anti-LGBTQ+ bills signed into law exceed the past seven years of state anti-LGBTQ+ legislation combined, according to the HRC.
Speaking out against the bill, democratic state senator Shevrin Jones, who is gay, told the Associated Press: “Every parent has the right to raise their child the way they want to as long as your child is not gay, trans [or] bisexual. That’s freedom for some parents, but not for all parents.”

Please browse my Facebook page or, better, my Slimandme.wordpress.com web-site, and you will likely find my political position similar.
I do recall a couple comments in a series in which I tried to express my sarcasm, frustration, anger at GIs and Veterans who are Republi-cons, who absolutely adore Drumpf. I don’t comprehend people who support candidates and ideology that opposes their own position. Drumpf hates GIs and Veterans, demeans their service.
My father served in WW2, the Occupation of Japan, and Korea. The Army awarded my father the Bronze Star for his action during his services at Korea. I’ve paid my respect at Arlington. I attend services when the mobile Wall comes to town, one of my friends has his name on that Wall. Small efforts in comparison.
I made enquiries about military service when I turned age 18. They rejected me in 1975 because I was in my Transition – Eisenhower’s Lavender Scare laws asserted that my existence is a ‘national security risk’.
You can note that I am Trans / Inter-sex and Lesbian. Yet countless people of our LGBT Community are loyal Republi-cons, devoted to Drumpf who opposes our very existence.
My high school Bestie served in the Navy, saw action during the Viet Nam War, was disabled by Agent Orange. Unfortunately, he rejected me because I am Trans, yet he claims himself to be Liberal, Democratic; a lesson to me that people can claim to be Liberal or Democratic while supporting illiberal and undemocratic ideology.

TOPLINE A New York Daily News scoop published Thursday revealed that the Trump administration has siphoned around $4 million from the New York City Fire Department’s fund for its September 11 first responders, drawing outrage on the 19th anniversary of the attacks, but the U.S. Treasury says the money was diverted because of “delinquent debt” owed by New York City to the federal government.

The funds are part of the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, which was established by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, a bill passed by Congress that provides healthcare to first responders who have suffered a range of illnesses from exposure to dust and smoke at Ground Zero.
“TRUMP DOESN’T ONLY HATE VETERANS, HE HATES FIRST RESPONDER HEROES,” tweeted actress Debra Messing in reaction to the Daily News report.
Fred Guttenberg, father of Parkland school shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg, said he was “F—KING P—-ED” about the report, because his brother died of cancer from 9/11.
“From the administration whose identity is built on claims of honoring first responders,” Julie Cohen, director of the RBG documentary, wrote on Twitter.
“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Army veteran and advocate Paul Rieckoff wrote on Twitter. “Trump did NOTHING to push for the extension of #Zadroga last year.”
“We are also working with Congressman King and others to examine any potential authorities to provide relief in this case to support our nation’s 9/11 heroes,” the Treasury spokesperson. told Forbes, but could not provide any examples of how they would do it, and did not have a timeline.
