Here in the US, we’re suffering an epidemic of dishonest fake belief, promoted by the people who took over the conservative party. Just call yourself a Christian, a patriot, a True American and you can get away with anything. All the perks, none of the costs of actually behaving in accord with any kind of disciplined lifestyle – license to indulge from the moral high ground. Trump takes it to a new level.
Trump plays classic Western god – self-obsessed, petty, petulant, disappointed, vengeful, cliquish, devoted solely to building his fan club, chronically bitter about being under-appreciated. And most of his followers are typical dishonest fake believers. They love him because they want to be like him. Trump teaches that earning respect by being honest isn’t the only way. Fellow liars will respect you if you lie and always get away with it.
With dishonest false belief you get to swagger like the moral police without living by your proclaimed moral standards. You can claim the piety even as you cheat, lie and steal.
It’s a win-win for the false believer. Your supreme piety rationalizes acting like a pig. You’re free to cheat because you’re fighting on the side of the righteous. You feel both righteous and clever, saintly and sneaky. Smart because you embrace true virtue; smart because you know how to fight dirtier than your dumb opponents.
It’s more tawdry even than the 9-11 fundamentalists drinking and whoring before they suicide bombed the Twin Towers. As Susan Sontag dared to comment right after the bombing, it’s no good calling suicide bombers cowards. They made sacrifices. That’s a costly signal one can’t fake. Dishonest false belief is a better bargain than that.
In sum, three categories for fanatics:
True believers who really try to live by their principles.
Dishonest false believers who don’t try to live by their principles but pretend that they do.
Honest false believers who don’t try to live by their principles and admit it, not taking their beliefs seriously, while still going through the motions for ritualistic sake.

These platforms are now the Republi-con Party ideology while the Democratic Party represents Freedom and Equality, fights against discrimination and bigotry, supports Voting Rights, Civil Rights, Constitutional Rights, Human Rights.

Welcome, my friends, to this draft as I try to create a diary of my memories of Mommy Stretch, Dora, Eagle, and Shadow.
I’ll be making this Public when I finish it.

9 May 21: Mother’s Day.
One item of my focus that day was on drafting a letter to my sister Kathy. Dunno that I so much as planned to actually send it or post it as a public expression, but mostly it was something that I was doing to clean my mind and organise my thoughts about issues at hand.
Also, that weekend, I was getting nostalgic about Slim through my memories triggered by the music of Michel Polnareff.

That morning began routine. I watched , then transcribed some quotes from, the Sunday morning news interview shows. Next was the hour of old, original ‘Superman’ TV episodes followed by the Sunday binge of ‘The Untouchables’.
I was also composing an essay about my prior name, Nickie. I considered posting that to both my web-site and this Facebook page. It remains incomplete, as well as my draft about my lifetime of experiences in athletics as both Nick / male and Sharon / female.
I have notes about Jenner and makings of another essay to post to my online presence. Ugh! No celebrity Trans people of that useless ilk! Amazing that with all the hundreds of millions of Dollars at one’s disposal, and she comes through FFS looking more as a disaster.
Alana sent a sweet Mother’s Day message to me that morning. Funny how we ourselves would soon be mommies to newborn kitties.
Instead, my attention for the next six weeks would turn to the lives of three of the most cutest kitties in the world.
That must be my possessive Mommy Sharon speaking.

The first neighbourhood cat who friended me, I called her Goldie. She had bright golden hair. There must have been something inside her ear canal. A bug? Grass? There must have been an infection from whatever it was. She frequently shook her head; she would not allow me to touch her ears.
Then came another cat, Spunky. He was mostly dark, black, maybe some golden mix, but not too much. He regularly came to meet me when I arrived home in my car; he was cute watching him bounding through the neighbour’s yards. He sat patiently for me to open the door. He would jump inside car looking through whatever was new; that became a bad idea one day. I thought that Spunky left the car after I finished unloading it. Two days later, I went to use the car to do errands – Spunky was inside, frazzled at his experience. I learned to always check that he was outside the car before I closed the doors.
There was Precious. She was a lighter grey and golden.
Ghost was all grey, as in ‘grey ghost’.
Both Precious and Ghost loved to climb on me and sit on my shoulders – one at each side – whenever I sat outside on the back patio.
Boots is grey with white feet.
We had Lizzie and Patches, similar in appearance to Stretch.
There’s also Midnight who is almost all black, Spot is grey with a white spot on her front chest.
10 May 21:
Last night, Alana and I were sitting on the back patio. We thought that we heard the slight sounds of newborn kittens on Sunday night. We kept hearing mewing, but couldn’t find where it was; I looked around the patio for the source. Patio lighting was dark, I saw nothing Sunday night. We didn’t expect kittens to be right there.
I went outside to the back patio earlier this afternoon, likely some totally routine purpose lost in the eventualities as well as set out fresh food and water for the neighbourhood kitties.
I kept hearing kittens mewing, I again searched to locate the sound, looking for the source of the mewing.
There was the answer – I discovered a kitten nursery. Mommy Stretch indeed had been pregnant. Stretch found a protected area for her kitties, she made her nursery on my back patio underneath a chair and surrounded by empty boxes, they are all lying on a plastic bag containing some paper towels. Her nursery was well hidden – there were her three newborn kittens whom she birthed on Mother’s Day. Three cute new babies, born probably Sunday night. The triplets are active, hopefully healthy.
One of the kitties started sucking on the plastic. Not good. I found a soft cotton towel to place underneath Mommy Stretch and her kitties, in place of the plastic bag. I am trying to move Mommy Stretch and her triplet kittens onto the towel where they will get comfy.
I then put fruit packing inserts around the back and sides of her nursery to keep the kitties inside.
Alana and I looked on Stretch with care for her and her kitties.
I bought kitten food to add to Stretch’s diet, to help improve her mommy’s milk to her babies and to feed to Dora, Eagle, and Shadow when the time came for them to eat from the dish.
I went to check on mommy kitty and baby kitties. I set food and water special for Mommy Stretch. I hoped that she would see or smell the food to go to it.
I hand-fed food to Stretch this afternoon. She was really hungry! I let the crunchies get moist in water so that she got nutrition and water. I left the food and water near her. She’s glad to be getting nourishment to help make milk to feed her little ones.
I would come to learn the personalities of each kitty.
– Dora is named because he is adventurous, eager to explore.
– Eagle was gentle. He was probably the ‘runt of the litter’. I cheered him on as he kept up with his brothers.
– Shadow was good to also explore his environment, he was equally content to find a comfortable place to snooze.
Stretch is a mix of colors – light black with patches of orange gold. So far, the triplets are one black and two tan. I learned to discern between Dora and Eagle with their similar tan appearance – Dora is more an even light tan. Eagle is more a darker tan, dark tan streaked with light tan along his back. Dunno how those colors will remain.

Stretch is amongst the neighbourhood kitties who found solace at my back yard. She is very friendly. She enjoys our human companionship. She enjoys eating the dinner we set out for her and the other cats each night.
Stretch appeared fat for a few weeks. My Bestie Alana and I lovingly called her ‘chubby’. I don’t know that pregnancy was on the high end of my list before that Sunday.
11 May 21:
Alana and I checked on Mommy Stretch and baby kitties before making a run to Goodwill for Senior Day Tuesday.
Mommy Stretch is eating what I hand-feed to her and drinking fresh water what I set for her. I hope that she sees or smells the food to go to it on her own when Alana and I are not here.
Stretch knows that she can get out and exercise in the back yard and on the patio.
She can get to her food and water on her own.
I need to make milk for them – I have powdered milk. NO! Ildi warned me to never feed cow’s milk to kittens. She tells me to read her reference. Do NOT feed cow’s milk to kittens!
13 May 21:
I came outside to check on Mommy Stretch and kitties. Stretch met me when I came outside. She was getting exercise.
All are well. Mommy Stretch is busy.
I moved the fan away and she went back to her babies.
I put a piece of fruit box insert to the side where Stretch can leave.
One of the tan kitties (probably Dora) tried to get out that way.
The black kitty (to be named Shadow) tried to walk out the front. Stretch was quick to grab the kitty and bring it back to her.
14 May 21:
Mommy Stretch is taking good care of her kitties. She was getting exercise when I went outside to set out fresh food and water for her.
15 May 21:
I checked on the nursery and say nighty night to Mama Stretch and her Stretchlettes.
16 May 21 (6pm):
It’s time to check on Stretch and her triplets.
I make my daily check on Mommy Stretch and her kitties.
17 May 21 (3am):
Yep. Stretch seems to know that she can get up, walk around. She isn’t required to be confined to her nursery.
She will sit with Alana or me when we check on them.
(Later):
Mommy Stretch ate dinner that I set for her at her nursery.
I set out two plates for anyone else who came. We got Lizzie, Spot, Midnight.
I later heard some noises behind me.
Stretch was coming to me, trying to get my attention. I don’t know.
Kitties look okay. Mommy Stretch will lie down with them.
I moved the food.
I saw what was happening.
Stretch was by me. I tried to show her where I moved the food dishes.
I saw Lizzie eating crunchies. Well, so did Stretch. Stretch attacked Lizzie and chased her throughout the yard and alley – I could hear it.
I’m sad for Lizzie. That’s why she doesn’t come around here – she is afraid of Stretch.
I put the box fan in front of Stretch’s nursery for protection from other cats or critters.
18 May 21:
I finally woke up about 10.30am.
I’m outside with Mommy Stretch and her kitties.
Alana and I shall meet and do errands, browse Goodwill for Senior Day discounts, Home Depot, and a pet store (to get de-worm meds for kitties, or whatever we need for them).

I take more pictures of Mommy Stretch and her kitties.
20 May 21:
Mommy Stretch is doing well. I left dinner with Stretch, she ate her dinner.
Spot came to look at the babies.
I had to put a cardboard sheet to block the front. One of the babies knows how to climb (Dora). Alana says that the little one got in trouble with grandma Sharon for trying to leave the nursery.
I check Mommy Stretch and her kitties at the end of each day. I need to be certain that there are no ants attracted to Stretch’s food.
21 May 21:
I did not install the LED string lights. The patio remains a little dark at night with only one string of LED lights. I’ll do it tomorrow.
I fed Mommy Stretch, checked on the kitties, and set out fresh food and water for the other kitties.
23 May 21:
I tried to nap during the morning and afternoon, but couldn’t.
I came outside late afternoon to watch the kittens and Mommy Stretch.
Other kitties came for dinner.
Alana and I install the second string of LED lights. The lights look nice. They add more, well, light. Better to see the nursery kitties.
24 May 21:
I took more pictures of Mommy Stretch and her kitties.
I set out more of the beef fat for Stretch earlier. She ate that.
I set out fresh water and dinner for the other kitties. I saw Midnight today.

Alana says that the cats seem to like chicken and beef, not pork.
Later, as the day became evening, the evening became night, Alana and I made one last check on Mommy Stretch and her kitties. We say ‘nighty night’ to the kitties.
26 May 21:
Lunar Eclipse this early morning. I stayed up most all night and morning to watch, needed to crash all day.
I go outside at 5pm to check on kitties. I set out fresh water and food.
Alana and I sit on the back patio and watch the kitties.
27 May 21:
I checked on our nursery – Mommy Stretch and kitties – before Alana and I do errands.
28 May (12 noon):
I have been dozing on and off this morning.
I have no particular plans for this weekend. Sleep is all.
Definitely need to sit with Stretch and her kitties. Keep their nursery clean. Bring fresh water and food. I bought a kitten chow mix for the kitties. I have been serving some of it to Stretch so that the special nutrition get to her kitties through her milk.
I dip my finger into the kitty food gravy and try to touch my finger to a kitten’s mouth to teach that this is food. They don’t understand it yet. I read from a cat web-site that kitties will begin eating on their own at three weeks – that’s this weekend.
(Later):
Where do I find these kitties? Several neighbourhood cats come here to my home. Some are friendly, some come to only eat the food that I set out for them.
Stretch was not friendly at first. I suspect that she may have been a house cat but fled from an abusive human. She gradually came to understand that I am a good human. That is why I feel good that she was comfortable having her kitties here.

Mommy Stretch and her kitties keep me busy. Kitties get restless, they want to explore. I then used a cardboard box to make into a nursery box. The nursery box will keep the kittens contained for a short while. The sides of the box don’t completely contain the rambunctious kitties, but helps. One kitty (Dora, the Explorer) knows how to climb out of the nursery box already.
Mommy Stretch is a good mommy cat. She watches her kitties. She knows each one, she counts each kitty to be certain that everyone is there – one kitty, two kitties, three kitties.
Stretch knows what to do to keep her kitties inside the box. She also knows how to bring back a kitty if one wanders outside the nursery box, she knows how to grab her kitties by their scruff.
Kittens are almost three weeks old. Not yet ready to eat on their own.
The temperature is getting hot – exceeding 100F. I turn on a fan to help circulate air around the nursery. Stretch likes the breeze.

Mommy and babies are doing well.
Back to sleep for all of us.

“The True Believers” is a psychology classic, a study undertaken by Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman moonlighting as a psycho-philosopher shortly after WWII. It profiles the characteristics of authoritarian fanatics, the kind we see falling for ISIS and here at home, for Trumpism or Evangelicalism.
To lump all such believers together as “true” seems a mistake. For starters, there are true and false believers. False believers think that declaring their commitment is enough. They don’t have to actually follow the beliefs or change how they act. They’re members in good standing simply because they declare themselves to be.
Authoritarian movements thrive on growth so they often make accommodations to false believers to fatten out their ranks. They don’t demand what anthropologist Bill Iron called “costly signals,” a term originating in evolutionary biology for hard-to-fake sacrifices, for example, giving up bacon to be a Muslim or Jew. No diet restrictions, no commitment to prayer every day and above all no moral restraint. Fake believers are afforded all of the benefits of membership at a trivial cost.
Authoritarian movements thrive on boldness, so they often welcome the rash and uncontrolled into their movements, for example, storm troopers or anti-communists in Indonesia, hoodlums who cared more for the fun of breaking eggs than for the movement making the omelet utopia it promises. False belief is great for that: Come for the cause, stay for the freedom to be your indulgent self, above the law because you have such a high calling.
The protestant movement started as a revolt against the Catholic Church’s accommodations to false believers, what Martin Luther disparaged as “frequent communion” going to church on Sunday and being a normal everyday slob the rest of the week.
And Protestantism slid into its own accommodations to false believers, for example Born Again baptism being all it takes to be a full-fledged member, all of your sins atoned for, except if you doubt your membership. Existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard railed against Christian false belief. He thought you weren’t really a Christian if you didn’t sweat blood trying to work out your existential status.
Most authoritarian movements start with some disdain for false believers just going through the motions, but end up allowing, inviting and encouraging it.
I would further distinguish honest from dishonest false believers. Honest false believers know and admit that they’re just going through the motions, claiming to be members but no different from other people.
I have great admiration for honest false believers. They join the club in name only, sort of like fans of a professional sports. They rally around the flag ritualistically. They know better than to believe that it makes them better than other people. It’s just a game, cosplay not taken very seriously by the cosplayers.
I just got back from three weeks working in Mainland China. I was impressed by the honest false belief in communism over there. Students dutifully take classes in Marxism and many people belong to the communist party, but from what I can tell, nobody takes it seriously nor needs to pretend that they do. They can’t attack communism in the press but they didn’t seem uncomfortable talking about how little relevance Marx has to social and economic life in China. You see pictures of Mao, Marx, the hammer and sickle too but that’s not where people live. There’s an admirable resigned realism in Chinese culture these days, borne perhaps of its very different cultural history.
Chinese philosophy and religion started 3000 years ago with deference to the “mandate of heaven,” never personified as a authoritarian god. The mandate of heaven was the Tao, the way things are, reality, not some vain and vengeful daddy deity who could grant you excuses for cutting corners on reality in his dutiful service.
Reverence for reality, reality worship – that’s great philosophical and religious prep for science. It’s the recognition that you can’t God-talk your way out from under reality’s constraints. Reality always wins in the end. China has its rituals and customs, of course, but they don’t seem as prone to fall for delusions and denial as we do in the West.

Black Transwoman Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells’ Body Found Dismembered In Philadelphia River

We are sick and tired of them being misgendered in the news. We are tired of them being excluded from the black lives matter movement. We are tired of their murders going unsolved. We are tired of them being marginalized by society. All of us have to do better to provide safe spaces for our trans sisters to not just survive but to thrive. We are tired.
Tuesday police made a horrific discovery as a dismembered body of a black transwoman was pulled from the river with trauma to the face and head, legs severed mid thigh.
Philadelphia police are investigating after the dismembered body of a transwoman were found on the banks of the Schuylkill River on Monday night.
The discovery was made along the 3500 block of Schuylkill Avenue in the Bartram’s Gardens area just before 7 p.m.
Police said the transwoman was found face down and had both legs severed. They are looking into the possibility Fells’ legs were severed along train tracks.
“What’s unusual is that both of the victim’s legs were cut off at the upper thighs. The body also seems to have some trauma to the head and face,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small with the Philadelphia Police Department.
Authorities spent the next couple of days trying to positively ID the victim. Information was not released immediately in order to notify the family and loved ones. It has been ruled a murder and is being rigorously investigated. The victim, was later identified as Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells.
The Office of LGBT Affairs has released the following statement in response to the passing of a member of the city’s LGBTQ community, Dominique Rem’mie Fells:
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of a member of our LGBTQ family. The pain of such a loss is always difficult, but it is especially deep as we are in the midst of Pride month—a season typically filled with joy and celebration for many in our community.
“As thousands take to the streets to proclaim that Black Lives Matter, it is critical we remember that this includes Black trans lives. Dominique Rem’mie Fells’ life mattered.
“We are reminded with this, and countless other painful losses—especially within our transgender communities—that there is much left to do until we achieve full equality, respect, and support for us all. The murder of transgender people—especially those of color—is truly an epidemic, and a crisis that we cannot afford to allow to persist any further.
“We are committed to ensuring that acts of discrimination, bigotry, and hatred are never tolerated in the city of Philadelphia. Know that we see you, we grieve with you, and we join you in solidarity at this time of great sadness.
“Please join the Office as we extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Dominique Rem’mie. Let us uplift her memory together.”

Two Black Transgender Women Were Killed This Week, When Will it End?
Dominique Rem’mie Fells of Philadelphia and Riah Milton of Liberty Township, Ohio, are the latest cases in a growing epidemic of Black trans homicides.

As the nation continues to demand action against white supremacy and police brutality, the recent deaths of two Black trans women are a disturbing reminder that we must stay vigilant to the growing violence against trans women of color.
Riah Milton of Liberty Township, Ohio, was shot and killed on Tuesday by three people who lured her into a park where she was ambushed and shot to death.
Three people have since been arrested in connection to her death.
Kaleb Marshall Tooson, 18, has since been charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Tyree Jeffery Cross, 25, currently has a warrant out for his arrest for Milton’s murder. A third assailant, an unidentified minor, was charged with complicity to aggravated robbery, murder, and tampering with evidence. He is currently being held by police.
“My dear sister Riah Milton passed away on June 9, 2020,” a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for Milton’s funeral and other arrangements. “She was an amazing person who was loved by everyone. This Gofundme is to help with sending her home.”
A second victim, Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells, was found along the banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia earlier this week.
Reports state that Fells’s body sustained serious injuries to the head and face. Her legs were separate from her body and were not recovered at the scene or anywhere else.
According to Philadelphia Gay News, the manner in which her legs were severed suggest “they were run over by a train.”
“One more precious Black trans woman’s life has been violently taken,” Deja Lynn Alvarez, a trans woman and community organizer, told Philadelphia Gay News.
“As thousands take to the streets to proclaim that Black Lives Matter, it is critical we remember that this includes Black trans lives,” Celena Morrison, a Black trans woman who leads the city’s office of LGBTQ+ Affairs, said in a statement. “Dominique Rem’mie Fells’ life mattered. We are reminded with this, and countless other painful losses — especially within our transgender communities — that there is much left to do until we achieve full equality, respect, and support for us all. The murder of transgender people — especially those of color — is truly an epidemic and a crisis that we cannot afford to allow to persist any further. Let us uplift her memory together.”
Morrison and her team are currently organizing a virtual grieving session for community members.
Both Milton and Fells were deadnamed and misgendered in early reports by local outlets following the news of their deaths. Their deaths are the latest in an epidemic of violence against Black trans women.
According to a 2019 audit by the National Center for Transgender Equality called “Failing to Protect and Serve,” which reviewed the 25 largest police departments in the country, it’s evident that law enforcement in the United States is failing to protect transgender people.
A separate survey from the NCTE of over 28,000 respondents showed that nearly 57 percent of trans people were afraid to go to the police when they needed help. Furthermore, 58 percent of trans people who had interaction with authorities claimed to have experienced harassment, abuse, or other mistreatment, while 60 percent reported to being physically assaulted and 64 percent reported to being sexually assaulted.
“We must shine a bright line on the increasing level of violence face by transgender people, and particularly Black transgender women,” Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, deputy executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality, said in a statement. “For every headline we see, we know that there are countless incidents of violence that go unreported because Black transgender people are afraid to go to the police. Dominique’s life mattered. Riah’s life mattered. We need to say their names and remember their lives.”
“Black transgender women live at the deadly intersection of transphobia, sexism and racism. Black lives matter. Black trans lives matter,” Heng-Lehtinen continued. “The police are failing Black transgender people. We must come together to enact meaningful reforms to ensure that transgender people can live their lives as they are without fear of violence in their communities or at the hands of the police.”

Transgender Health Protections Reversed By Trump Administration

Roger Severino, who directs the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services, has long argued that “sex discrimination” protections in the Affordable Care Act aren’t meant to encompass protections for transgender people.

The Trump administration on Friday finalized a rule that would remove nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people when it comes to health care and health insurance.
“HHS respects the dignity of every human being, and as we have shown in our response to the pandemic, we vigorously protect and enforce the civil rights of all to the fullest extent permitted by our laws as passed by Congress,” said Roger Severino, who directs the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services, in a written statement announcing that the HHS rule had become final. The rule is set to go into effect by mid-August.
It is one of many rules and regulations put forward by the Trump administration that defines “sex discrimination” as only applying when someone faces discrimination for being male or female, and does not protect people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Supporters of the new rule said this is a necessary reversal of Obama-era executive overreach and will reduce confusion about the legal meaning of “sex discrimination.” Critics argue the rule could further harm an already vulnerable group — transgender people — in the midst of a pandemic and historic unrest spurred by the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
“I can’t help but wonder if the timing [of this rule] is by design so that this is something that people won’t pay attention to,” said Tia Sherèe Gaynor, a political science professor at the University of Cincinnati.
What the final rule does
The rule focuses on nondiscrimination protections laid out in Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. That federal law established that it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of “race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in certain health programs and activities.” In 2016, an Obama-era rule explained that protections regarding “sex” encompass those based on gender identity, which it defined as “male, female, neither, or a combination of male and female.”
‘Whiplash’ Of LGBTQ Protections And Rights, From Obama To Trump
In June 2019, under Trump, the HHS Office for Civil Rights proposed a rule (the one finalized this week) that reverses the one from the Obama administration.
Severino said at the time, “We’re going back to the plain meaning of those terms, which is based on biological sex.” He also said the rule could save hospitals and insurers and others $2.9 billion over five years since they will be relieved of the requirement to print notices of nondiscrimination in several languages and include them with any “significant” mailings.
Under the new rule, a transgender person could, for example, be refused care for a checkup at a doctor’s office, said Lindsey Dawson, associate director of HIV policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Other possible scenarios include a transgender man being denied treatment for ovarian cancer, or a hysterectomy not being covered by an insurer — or costing more when the procedure is related to someone’s gender transition.
The Trump rule makes changes to gender-based discrimination protections beyond Section 1557 of the ACA; it affects regulations pertaining to access to health insurance, for example, including cost-sharing, health plan marketing and benefits. The rule could also mean that those seeking an abortion could be denied care if performing the procedure violates the provider’s moral or religious beliefs.
Even with the rule now finalized, an LGBTQ person who is discriminated against or denied health care can still sue, and courts may rule that their civil rights were violated in such a case. But that’s not an easy avenue, Dawson said.
“Because of limited access to litigation, I think that it’s fair to state that the ramifications [of this rule] could be pretty significant,” she said. Protections will also vary based on where someone lives, she added, so the rule “creates a patchwork of civil rights, compared to standardized protections.”
For Severino, this move has been a long time coming. He joined the Trump administration from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, where he wrote a paper on gender protections in Section 1557. He’s also a devout Catholic and, as director of the Office for Civil Rights, has made protections of religious freedom a key focus, including the right of doctors to refuse to provide care that contradicts their religious or moral beliefs.
The rule the HHS proposed on gender and discrimination in health care garnered 155,966 public comments. The final rule is nearly identical to the original version proposed last year.
Conservative groups, including the Christian Medical Association, the Susan B. Anthony List and the Heritage Foundation, applauded the new HHS guidance.
“Health professionals know they must base medical decisions on biology and science, not ideology,” Dr. Jeff Barrows, the Christian Medical Association’s executive vice president for bioethics and public policy, said after hearing the announcement.
“We are hopeful that this rule will help steer consideration of gender issues in health care back toward science and away from politics and ideology, back to the protection of professional medical judgment and the freedom to adhere to long-observed ethical and moral standards.”
Telemedicine Takes Transgender Care Beyond The City
Ryan Anderson, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former colleague of Severino’s, submitted a comment in support of the rule. Anderson said it simply reverses what he sees as the Obama administration’s executive overreach.
“Just for the lawmaking process, it’s important that the Trump administration clarify that that’s not what Congress had in mind when they used the word ‘sex,’ ” he said.
Critics worry about access to health care, especially in a pandemic
Mari Brighe, a freelance writer and transgender woman who lives outside Detroit, called the rule “terrifying.”
“I can relate a decade of stories about getting terrible health care because I’m trans,” Brighe said. “We walk into any given health care situation not knowing whether doctors are going to treat us well, whether we’re going to get high quality care, whether any given, random health care person is going to be terrible to us.”
Once, when seriously ill with the flu and having trouble breathing, Brighe recalled, she was sent home from a hospital in rural New York and ended up driving 90 minutes and crossing a lake by ferry to get treatment at a hospital in Vermont.
She said worries now that the rule could make transgender people — who are already reluctant to seek medical care — all the more likely to avoid coronavirus treatment and testing.
“The way that [the rule] reads to me is that people could refuse to collect your COVID specimen because they don’t want to touch a trans person,” she said. “That’s a recipe for spreading a really terrible pandemic among a really, really vulnerable population.”
“I can’t help but think about how this impacts black trans people,” said Gaynor, the political science professor, who noted that African American transgender people are “arguably the most marginalized group in our country.”
African Americans who get COVID-19 are much more likely to die from that disease than are white Americans, statistics show. A recent report from the Williams Institute at UCLA estimates that hundreds of thousands of transgender adults may be especially vulnerable to COVID-19 because they have an underlying condition, are over 65, lack health insurance or live in poverty.
For black transgender people, Gaynor said, “it’s layers of oppression — it’s transphobia on top of racism on top of economic oppression.” All of that could affect their ability to get health care during the pandemic, she said, which in turn could have public health implications for all.
Katie Keith, a health law professor at Georgetown University, noted that the new rule could have another chilling effect. “Even if no one actually does discriminate more because of the rule, you’ve created a fear,” Keith said.
She pointed to research documenting how the “public charge” rule — which penalizes people who are seeking to become citizens if they use public safety net programs such as nutrition and housing assistance — affected people and programs outside the scope of the rule itself.
“When they target these vulnerable populations, you see less enrollment in health insurance,” she said. “You see folks scared to go to the doctor.”
Sheriff’s Deputy Sues Her County To Get Health Coverage For Transgender-Related Care
Although the Heritage Foundation’s Anderson supports the rule, he said the prospect that it could have a chilling effect is “a very reasonable concern.”
“I don’t think any reasonable person wants to see transgender people not enrolling in health care plans and not having access to health care,” Anderson said. What’s needed, he said, is a “finer grain” approach to this issue — such as a new law in Congress that protects LGTBQ people from health care discrimination generally but carves out protection for providers to refuse to provide care related to sex reassignment.
What’s next? a word from the high court and, perhaps, Congress
Now that it’s marked “final,” this rule — which was issued by an agency of the executive branch — may now encounter hurdles via the two other branches of the federal government.
This month, for example, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to weigh in on two major cases on the meaning of the word “sex” in employment discrimination. The two cases involve issues closely related to the legal questions at play in Severino’s HHS rule, and the high court’s decision might have major implications for the rule’s legal footing.
Fresh Challenges To State Exclusions On Transgender Health Coverage
“It’s wild that they’re finalizing this rule before we have the Supreme Court decision,” Keith said.
Meanwhile, in Congress, House Democrats have already asserted that they strongly disagree with the HHS rule. In early May, Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement that read, in part: “The Administration must immediately abandon this outrageous, un-American plan and give LGBTQ individuals the reassurance that they will never be denied the health care they or their families need.”
Now that the final rule is out, Congress does have a way of invalidating it, using the Congressional Review Act. That would only happen in this case if — within 60 days that Congress is in session — Trump were no longer president, and simple majorities in both chambers of Congress voted to block the rule. Even if Democrats win big in November, it’s not clear if that’s a possibility given the tricky timeline — Congress is typically in recess in August, and the COVID-19 pandemic may complicate matters further
The date at which the final rule would be able to avoid this congressional threat is a moving target, Keith said. “Folks are watching the calendar now [wondering], ‘When is that 60-day legislative deadline?’ “
What’s much more certain, she said, is that there will be lawsuits to try to overturn the rule or block it from going into effect.
On Friday, less than an hour after HHS issued its press release, LGBTQ activist group Lambda Legal said it would challenge the new rule in court.
“Today’s rule is a tragically failed public health policy and just flat-out illegal,” Omar Gonzalez-Pagan, Lambda Legal senior attorney and health care strategist, said in a written statement. “We will be challenging the rule because at a time when the entire world is battling a dangerous pandemic, which in the United States has infected more than 2,000,000 people and killed more than 116,000, it is critical for everyone to have ready access to the potentially lifesaving health care they need.”
Unless someone does file a lawsuit that results in a judge putting the rule on hold, it is set to go into effect 60 days from the date the rule is published in the Federal Register.

( 4) in government contract employment,
( 5) in insurance,
( 6) in medical care,
( 7) in adoption and foster care,
( 8.) in the military,
( 9) in treatment of prisoners,
(10) in refugees seeking assylum from anti-lgbt violence,
(11) in erasing us from the census,
(12) in withholding federal funding unless schools deliberately discriminate against trans people in sports,
(13) in removal from even being allowed to be spoken about at the CDC let alone considered,
(14) in widespread nominations of outspoken anti-trans judges,
(15) in the justice department advised to refuse to stand up for or protect trans workers and even having trans people’s own department of justice petitioning the supreme court for open season in discrimination against us on the basis of sex in all employment public or private stating that transgender status “does not prohibit discrimination against transgender persons based on their transgender status.”

(17) in appealing against accommodating passports for gender neutral trans people,
(18) with the elderly or poor on medicare or medicaid,
(19) with discrimination in the federal grants process,

And with the above many of these have had multiple repeat attacks playing out on trans people’s respect, and dignity.
But it’s just coincidence right? Not a deliberate systemic targeted approach with a clear and deliberate pattern of targeting over and over and attacking us and codifying and institutionalizing blatant discrimination? You would have to blind or dishonest to pretend that is not what’s happening. This makes me sick.

Doing Internet searches is quite interesting. I can start by looking for one thing and soon look for something else.
So it was Tuesday night.
My friend and I were chatting about Trans airline pilots. I remembered Karen, one of my contemporaries. We never met. I saw her frequenting the 1980s TV interview circuit with a few other Trans persons willing to go public about their private lives.
Karen’s airline fired her because she Transitioned – same as my situation at about the same time (early 1980s). She fared better than me; though she lost her case at the US Supreme Court, her employer eventually settled.
Karen led the way for Trans pilots.
If I could have had a lawyer, that lawyer would have known her case and likely my results would have been totally different. Maybe both of our cases could have been joined together and we would have both done better.
But no lawyer accepted me. I had to fight for my Unemployment Insurance on my own when Forest Service objected. I won my case at the Utah State Supreme Court – they ruled that Forest Service conducted six years of a hostile work environment against me.
Karen died a few years later – 1989, about the same time as Billy Tipton, Christine Jorgensen, and my father.

I went to ‘Images’ to make screen prints of whatever might be available about Karen. OMG – there is a picture of Denise among pictures of Karen. Some special force in the Cosmos is telling me to go search Denise (my mentor from the early 1970s). I found an article back in maybe 2015 that reported her death, but that article didn’t seem credible, so I hadn’t checked since then. After a few whirlwind years of publicity, Denise went private. I uphold her privacy.
I was sharing a memory about Denise with my friend. I told her how I travelled out of town. My thought seeing Faith was ‘Small world, eh?’ and instead I met someone who would become my mentor. Thus, I met Denise quite by accident when I mistook that she was Faith, one of my high school class-mates.
There I was – searching for Faith on the Internet. Instead of finding her picture, I found her obituary.
Next, I landed at my high school where I attended 12th Grade. I found too many more names of class-mates and school-mates at the school’s obituary page.
I enrolled in my high school’s Facebook page and posted an introduction.

I went to check on my post to the high school Facebook page. Wow – several comments, several ‘Like’.
So it begins …
Keith was one of my class-mates who knew me during 12th Grade.
Keith wrote a comment – he wrote that that he remembers me.
Uh-oh!
Which me? Nick? Sharon? Or does he think that Nick was Sharon? Not Nick? My ‘then’ picture is Nick, not Sharon. My current picture is Sharon, not Nick.
I decided to browse his Facebook page to see where he is. Most students were military children whose parents worked at the military base.
He speaks on some pages. His voice is as I remember it.
Nope! That was as far as the positive goes.
I certainly knew going in that I would find possible danger.
He’s Republi-con and Christian Con-servative. Right from the beginning. He has an article supporting a Right-wing Republi-con Christian Con-servative. Someone whose political agenda is the total demise of LGBT.
Not one sign of rainbows or unicorns. No LGBT colors. No Trans colors.
There’s a post about his support for Chick-fil-A. To be fair, it is about good customer service. To be critical, I doubt that Chick would do the same for an LGBT customer.

When I attended two decades ago, there was little push about religion at class, among students, with the faculty and administrators. Many students were not Baptist, so Baptist people were ‘live and let live’ toward non Baptist and non Christian back then.
I had a good two years there even though their policy was openly opposed to LGBT – no LGBT students, no LGBT teachers, no LGBT administration. No LGBT on campus. Yet not once did anyone at university ever question me. I have no recollection that any one at any time ever said any thing derogatory about LGBT the entire time I attended as a student, came on campus as a community member.
I recently read that the university is now an open and welcoming campus for LGBT.
I was always respectful toward the university people – Baptist or not. Being deep stealth, I was certainly not going to out my presence to anyone; I still don’t.
Keith would know about the university – know that it’s Baptist. Dunno if he thinks that I am Baptist.
Huh?
I went away for a while. I went to browse the Buena page where I posted.
There is Ronda’s entry in my Notifications. When I tap it – blank screen, nothing.

It was good that I made a screen print of the comments to my post.
The comment from Ronda with my reply, Keith’s reply that he remembers me, and my reply to Keith’s comment earlier this afternoon about our shared experiences – it’s gone. Deleted. That entire group of comments are gone from my post, from my view.
Keith removed his ‘Like’ from the post.
Did Ronda and Keith browse my Facebook page? Were they NOT amused?
At least my post remains – for now. For how long?
Meanwhile, I found a series of Keith’s comments from another post. Keith misses his brother’s death by a year. Robert died February 1977.
I went to Keith’s Recent Activity page at the school’s page. There was an entry in Recent Activity for the missing thread. As I was about to make a screen print – it disappeared.
I located Ronda’s actual Facebook page. Ronda – maybe a troll – not much to her About page nor her Timeline page.
I sent a text message to the school moderator asking what happened and why the series of comments are deleted.
I went to look at my post at the high school page a few more hours later. Those comments are still missing. More people are checking ‘Like’ – the count is more than 30.
I am having second thoughts. I made a big boo-boo. Maybe I should have just posted my current picture, should not have posted my ‘then’ picture from my graduation. I am Nick in my ‘then’ picture and now there’s Sharon in my current picture – that attracted the wrong attention. Lesson learned.
Okay. Gonna admit that I am making presumptions that might mean nothing at all. Kick me in the shins for this.
Lesson learned about Keith. I didn’t have any expectations from him. I hadn’t even thought about him – I could not remember his name. To me, he demonstrated what his religion does for him – hate. He was okay about me til he probably came to my page, read my essays, and decided that I am not his idea of whomever he might have presumed to be.
Then the obvious hit me. My current icon is the Kiera Butterfly in the Trans blue, pink, and white. Sheesh! I’m denser than anyone to have missed that.
I suppose that I am coming from knowing the Trans blue – pink – white butterfly. I am supposing that a Christian Con-servative would know. They know who we are, they are posting about killing us all.
Here I am adding this update. That is essentially for me alone, for the record. I don’t expect that people return to any of these posts once they read it. I also plan to post this experience to my web-site. That draws a likely different audience – people who occasionally browse old essays when they read the new essays. That I know because I check my statistics page. I am regularly amazed when I see that someone read an essay from the past. Thank you, Dear Reader.

Crash Kills Sex-Changed Combat Pilot Karen Ulane

Karen Ulane, a decorated Vietnam combat pilot who was fired by Eastern Airlines after a sex-change operation in 1980, was killed in the crash of a World War II-vintage charter plane. She was 48.
Ulane, known until her surgery as Kenneth Ulane, was at the controls when the twin-propeller DC-3 owned by an air taxi and cargo service crashed and burned in a field near here Monday. Two others aboard were killed.
Ulane had a sex-change operation and hormone treatments in 1980 after 12 years with Eastern. The airline fired her, citing possible safety hazards in stressful situations. U.S. District Judge John F. Grady ordered reinstatement and $158,590 in back pay and other expenses in 1983. An appeals court disagreed and reversed the decision, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1985 let the appellate ruling stand.
Ulane eventually received a settlement from Eastern that was “substantially more” than the amount ordered by Grady, said her attorney, Dean Dickie.
Survivors include a son from a marriage while she was Kenneth Ulane.

Life and career
Ulane was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep. Ulane joined the United States Army and flew combat missions in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968, then became a pilot for Eastern Airlines.[2] Following employment with Eastern Airlines, Ulane transitioned from Kenneth to Karen Frances in April 1980.[3]
T.R. Buttion, the Senior Vice President of Flight Operations presented her with a letter of termination on April 24, 1981 that read, “It is our belief that the controversial nature of the operation you have undergone will detract from and prevent any flight crew of which you are a part of from operating in the integrated, coordinated fashion that is necessary to attain the highest degree of safety.” The letter also noted that other Eastern pilots would refuse to fly with her.[4]
Ulane filed a discrimination charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which resulted in the civil case, Ulane v. Eastern Airlines. In her case against Eastern Airlines, Ulane reported coping with gender dysphoria from the age of 5 or 6.[3] Although she won the case against Eastern,[5] it was overturned on appeal the in U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.[2][6][7]
Ulane died in the crash of a chartered DC-3 she was piloting on a training flight, approximately five miles southwest of DeKalb, Illinois on May 22, 1989. Two others also died in the crash.[8][9]

The Aurora Municipal Airport`s American flag is at half-staff in honor of three aviators with strong personal and professional links to the airport who died in the crash of a DC-3 airplane on Monday.
Those killed were Paul Killman, 56, of Aurora, chairman of the airport`s advisory board since October and a board member since 1981; Karen Ulane, 48, of Aurora, a decorated military pilot, a board member and a pilot for the charter firm that owned the DC-3; and Arthur Lutz, 72, a ”pilot`s pilot” who had been flying since World War II and who was also a pilot for the DC-3`s owner.
”Paul and Karen were the two most unselfish people I ever met,” said Robert A. Rieser, director of the airport, which is owned by the City of Aurora.
Rieser and others were perplexed about the crash`s cause. Who was piloting the aircraft when it crashed is not known, but Lutz had thousands of hours of experience flying DC-3s and Ulane also was qualified in the DC-3. The airplane itself had recently undergone extensive renovation and recertification by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Killman was along for the ride.
”You couldn`t keep him out of an airplane,” Rieser said.
”Lutz was one of the best pilots, and he was flying one of the best airplanes,” said Ernest Kobrow, a part-owner of Condor Enterprises Inc., based in the Aurora airport. Condor Enterprises recently was certified by the FAA to use the renovated DC-3 for charter flights.
The DC-3 that crashed Monday was on a checkout flight before a charter, Kobrow said. It hit the ground and exploded in a field about five miles south of De Kalb about a half-hour after taking off from Aurora.
Ulane, a native of Chicago`s Bridgeport neighborhood, learned to fly in 1959. Then known as Kenneth, Ulane flew combat missions for the Army in Vietnam, earning the Air Medal of Honor.
Ulane was later a pilot for Eastern Airlines, rising to the rank of first officer and flight instructor, before taking a leave in 1979 for a sex-change operation and changing her name to Karen.
Eastern fired her, citing possible safety hazards, but Ulane filed suit in federal court and briefly won reinstatement and back pay. An appeals court reversed her victory, and the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the reversal to stand.
Since leaving Eastern, she had piloted planes for charter firms at the Aurora airfield and operated several businesses, including a flower shop in Wheaton and an aviation equipment business in Aurora, Rieser said.
She was building her own airplane, a single-engine GP-4, out of wood and fiberglass.
Killman was also building his own airplane, a bi-winged acrobatic aircraft, and was finished except for the engine and instruments, Rieser said. Killman, a retired AT&T supervisor, was converting a small boat drydocked on the airport grounds to use as a charter fishing boat.
”Sometimes I`d see him just sitting on the boat, watching the world go by with his aircraft radio on,” Rieser said.
Lutz, a pilot in World War II, later worked for major airlines piloting various aircraft, including jumbo jets, Kobrow said. He had accumulated 30,000 hours of flying time.
Services for Lutz will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Michael`s Episcopal Church, 647 Dundee Ave., Barrington.
Graveside services for Killman will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the New Rosehill Cemetery, in Downstate Marion.
Mass for Ulane will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1039 W. 32d St., Chicago.

The Trump movement has created an epidemic of fanatically self-righteous cheaters, liars and grifters

“The True Believers” is a psychology classic, a study undertaken by Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman moonlighting as a psycho-philosopher shortly after WWII. It profiles the characteristics of authoritarian fanatics, the kind we see falling for ISIS and here at home, for Trumpism or Evangelicalism.
To lump all such believers together as “true” seems a mistake. For starters, there are true and false believers. False believers think that declaring their commitment is enough. They don’t have to actually follow the beliefs or change how they act. They’re members in good standing simply because they declare themselves to be.
Authoritarian movements thrive on growth so they often make accommodations to false believers to fatten out their ranks. They don’t demand what anthropologist Bill Iron called “costly signals,” a term originating in evolutionary biology for hard-to-fake sacrifices, for example, giving up bacon to be a Muslim or Jew. No diet restrictions, no commitment to prayer every day and above all no moral restraint. Fake believers are afforded all of the benefits of membership at a trivial cost.
Authoritarian movements thrive on boldness, so they often welcome the rash and uncontrolled into their movements, for example, storm troopers or anti-communists in Indonesia, hoodlums who cared more for the fun of breaking eggs than for the movement making the omelet utopia it promises. False belief is great for that: Come for the cause, stay for the freedom to be your indulgent self, above the law because you have such a high calling.
The protestant movement started as a revolt against the Catholic Church’s accommodations to false believers, what Martin Luther disparaged as “frequent communion” going to church on Sunday and being a normal everyday slob the rest of the week.
And Protestantism slid into its own accommodations to false believers, for example Born Again baptism being all it takes to be a full-fledged member, all of your sins atoned for, except if you doubt your membership. Existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard railed against Christian false belief. He thought you weren’t really a Christian if you didn’t sweat blood trying to work out your existential status.
Most authoritarian movements start with some disdain for false believers just going through the motions, but end up allowing, inviting and encouraging it.
I would further distinguish honest from dishonest false believers. Honest false believers know and admit that they’re just going through the motions, claiming to be members but no different from other people.
I have great admiration for honest false believers. They join the club in name only, sort of like fans of a professional sports. They rally around the flag ritualistically. They know better than to believe that it makes them better than other people. It’s just a game, cosplay not taken very seriously by the cosplayers.
I just got back from three weeks working in Mainland China. I was impressed by the honest false belief in communism over there. Students dutifully take classes in Marxism and many people belong to the communist party, but from what I can tell, nobody takes it seriously nor needs to pretend that they do. They can’t attack communism in the press but they didn’t seem uncomfortable talking about how little relevance Marx has to social and economic life in China. You see pictures of Mao, Marx, the hammer and sickle too but that’s not where people live. There’s an admirable resigned realism in Chinese culture these days, borne perhaps of its very different cultural history.
Chinese philosophy and religion started 3000 years ago with deference to the “mandate of heaven,” never personified as a authoritarian god. The mandate of heaven was the Tao, the way things are, reality, not some vain and vengeful daddy deity who could grant you excuses for cutting corners on reality in his dutiful service.
Reverence for reality, reality worship – that’s great philosophical and religious prep for science. It’s the recognition that you can’t God-talk your way out from under reality’s constraints. Reality always wins in the end. China has its rituals and customs, of course, but they don’t seem as prone to fall for delusions and denial as we do in the West.
Here in the US, we’re suffering an epidemic of dishonest fake belief, promoted by the people who took over the conservative party. Just call yourself a Christian, a patriot, a True American and you can get away with anything. All the perks, none of the costs of actually behaving in accord with any kind of disciplined lifestyle – license to indulge from the moral high ground. Trump takes it to a new level.
Trump plays classic Western god – self-obsessed, petty, petulant, disappointed, vengeful, cliquish, devoted solely to building his fan club, chronically bitter about being under-appreciated. And most of his followers are typical dishonest fake believers. They love him because they want to be like him. Trump teaches that earning respect by being honest isn’t the only way. Fellow liars will respect you if you lie and always get away with it.
With dishonest false belief you get to swagger like the moral police without living by your proclaimed moral standards. You can claim the piety even as you cheat, lie and steal.
It’s a win-win for the false believer. Your supreme piety rationalizes acting like a pig. You’re free to cheat because you’re fighting on the side of the righteous. You feel both righteous and clever, saintly and sneaky. Smart because you embrace true virtue; smart because you know how to fight dirtier than your dumb opponents.
It’s more tawdry even than the 9-11 fundamentalists drinking and whoring before they suicide bombed the Twin Towers. As Susan Sontag dared to comment right after the bombing, it’s no good calling suicide bombers cowards. They made sacrifices. That’s a costly signal one can’t fake. Dishonest false belief is a better bargain than that.
In sum, three categories for fanatics:
True believers who really try to live by their principles.
Dishonest false believers who don’t try to live by their principles but pretend that they do.
Honest false believers who don’t try to live by their principles and admit it, not taking their beliefs seriously, while still going through the motions for ritualistic sake.
Honest false believers have a peculiar kind of integrity that I admire. If you need to belong to some cultural tribe, and many people do, it’s healthy to admit that it doesn’t really elevate you above others. It’s your thing but it’s not a big thing.
